Somewhat pessimistic about the vps industry

XSXXSX Member, Host Rep

A tomato and scrambled eggs are more expensive than a vps. The passion I had 10 years ago no longer exists.

    commoditization.

many of these providers add no value; just selling raw resources with a small tax.

  • Yeah but you see, a tomato and scrambled eggs have unlimited bandwidth.

  • You can eat tomato and scrambled eggs. You cannot eat a VPS.

  • As with every industry, supply and demand controls the price.
The supply today is almost unlimited, new hardware makes it possible to spin up a lot of virtual machines for very little money and naturally, the price goes down. Anyone can sell vps's today, which makes the market extremely saturated.
That's just the reality, that's how it works.

I don't think that the price is good indicator of how good the industry is. Given that this is lowendtalk, the prices must be as low as possible, isn't it? ;)

    Not with that attitude

  • Most time its about what you giving more to customers, For me I okay spend more money just for peace on mind, this why AWS does on cloud.
    And marketing of course.

Btw, I cough my drink when see linux logo spinning on your website. :D

Isn't that always the case with making a business out of one's passion? The stress of business will squeeze all the fun out of doing what you love.

After a certain period of time, any business often loses its appeal and usefulness to its owner. This phenomenon is referred to as burnout. To prevent burnout, several solutions have been developed. These include expanding the business, diversifying its operations, and outsourcing routine tasks, among others.

My preferred strategy has always been to have multiple tasks on the go at the time and lists (paper). When you are getting burned out on larger tasks go cross some small items off. It's very cathartic and you feel like you are achieving something.

I suffer from major burnout in everything I do in life, I love new things for like 2 months. I remember when app Dev became a thing and as a company we started, I loved it! But now app Dev is sooo blah! ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿ˜‚

What I've done over the years (22) is build the business in such a way with our multiple separate divisions, that as owner I can dabble for 6 months in one division hard core, then when I'm over it, I leave my guys to do their thing and start focusing on another division for 6 months. Large projects inside divisons really helps also.

Its also helped my techs and devs keep from the same burnout, I let them cross work between projects and divisions, dabling a little here and there, to help them not get burnout.

Still happens but its easier. Thats one of the reasons our divisions do so many different things, I dabble too much.

Usually this is when our divisions grow when I'm laser focused for 6 months.

But its hard, I think any business industry this is a thing, but I think in tech its harder because of customer relations.

  • I believe having a higher purpose helps avoid burnout. It's helped me navigate a lot of frustration with work/career/projects.

Ask yourself, WHY are you doing what you're doing? If it's hard to answer that question, or you don't like your own honest answer to that question, then something needs to change. And that's when life (and your work) can get very interesting, because the "why" is a way more compelling reason to get up in the morning than the "what."

    I disagree.
There is a guy over in Europe eating a car, one little piece of metal at a time, and he is close to finishing.
If someone can eat a whole car, then someone can easily eat a hard drive with a VPS on it. ;-)

Would it count if the disk image is stored in a micro SD? That way it's not even a single meal, just one bite.

well I believe it is due to general economic issue all over the world, even IPs are getting cheaper . As for passion , it diminishes with time . The passion you have for a new car will diminishes in 10 years old car .

My Dr. suggested this as well. Just really hard to force new habit while the determination is gone.

Competition and tough economic situation globally. Everyone is hungry for cash.
The prior few years were extravagant spending. Everything went up.

Sometimes you need to step away for a while and put your focus on something else for a moment. Do something you would not do normally. A new hobby, vacation or something.

Think about your mission and what your long term goals are, and where you want to go forwards. Have a conversation with yourself, no distractions. Meditation can help too, or some people call this napping, therapy, relaxation etc. Being silent, and extremely relaxed for 30+ mins. Journaling is another way.

We made some extremely big mistakes over the past few years in hardware investments and direction, but funny enough, the stress compounded by energy crisis actually made it easier to deal with. Moving fast enough the depression never catches you and stress can be an excellent motivator to move even faster! ;)

Every problem is an opportunity in disguise.

  • Come to Indonesian market, cheapest vps here around $3-$4, eggs less then $2 per kilogram even for premium eggs, tomato $0,1 a piece.

Unless it IDCH / Herza / Biznet Gio. Most provider VPS pricing was ~7$-ish.
And eggs was 3$ per box (25pcs on 5x5 box)
    Tomato was 5ยข per pcs.

Hehe, nope.. the wage is actually enough if we live normally, we could eat scrambled eggs and tomatoes for 30 days and still have a few vps.
The point is here in Indonesia, scrambled egg and tomatoes is much cheaper than vps.

  • Well if you do your scrambled eggs and tomatoes at home it is not expensive at all. Most VPS are just offering the minimal and they nickel and dime you for the rest.

I just read that renewing my ID card next month will cost 22โ‚ฌ, more than what I pay for a good VPS. But they only accept cash, no capitalist credit card. Last time that retard at the city registrar was teaching me how evil and antisocial banks are, clueless that the socialism he fell in love with is sponsored by the same.

They'll take fingerprints too, and they'll be stored "safely and privately" in the digital ID card and no one will have access to them. Sure... (they'll end up in a datacenter in Israel, Australia and US at minimum)

At least I'll give the fag a 10 years old picture and pretend I took it the same day. The retard isn't gonna realize it's the same picture of the old document, with a winter overcoat and a scarf. And I'm gonna waste that retard a good 10 minutes explaining that 22โ‚ฌ is more than a VPS. At least I'll have fun watching the automa meatbot take me as an idiot with a complacent gaze of unconfident superiority.

How many tomatoes does it cost to renew an ID card in Indonesia?
