The $21.90 server comes with a $43 setup fee though. other than than, it's a good deal.

Basically, for the first 3 months there aren't any big discount with setup fee guys.
    Example:

$21/m server will cost $63 for 3 months without setup fee
with setup fee, it will cost $63 for first month (42$ setup fee)
    and other 2 months cost 21+21 $42
    63+42=105
    105/3= $35/m

Yeah, if you buy and cancel it after 3 months, you pay $35 per month actually for this server.

So the discount is about %15 ($5-6) for first 3 months.
If you're planning to use it for long term, go for it, cheap.

I did not remember that you can only get 1 IP address with Kimsufi so it's no good to me.
If anybody would like to rent it, I'll do it for $30/month (to cover the setup fee), it's in France.

  • Must resist the temptation to grab one of the E5 to see if there is a way to access IPMI via ipv6 or something. Must resist.

Is the 250mbps really a limit? Or is it burstable up to 1gbps? 250 mbps in 2023 is meh

No, just a vague recollection of a post a few years ago about ipmitools or something like that. Probably not going to work.

Any bench for KS-5 as well?

Want to get KS-12 but KS-5 has 2TB HDD.
Should I go with KS-12 for more RAM?

Yes 250 Mbps is the limit for SYS but sometimes you win the OVH lottery and you get a server with more than that. Sometimes only download gets the 'upgrade'. Sometimes only ipv6.

The HDD speed is atrocious, going with KS-12 that is.

Does the 14 day refund policy not apply to you? (I wasn't ever sure if that's for EU customers only or everyone.)

Even their Rise boxes have 250 mbps. If you want gigabit, you have to go to their expensive Advanced series...

All of their servers have 1 Gbit download, even on Kimsufi except the KS-1.

It is the upload side that is the lottery.

I rolled a KS-1 that had symmetrical gigabit, but they "fixed" it one week later since it was later capped to 100 mbps (despite the box sitting idle the whole time, no bandwidth use).

But good to know that all other models have the 1 Gbps download since I was thinking of getting another Eco server in the future (e.g. around Black Friday). Thanks for the info.

I mean it's not official, but that's what you see in all the YABSes that people post in their sales threads.

That's what I noticed too, and my past Eco OVH boxes also had gigabit down. I just didn't know KS-1 was special in being the exception (I was thinking all this time that I got super unlucky to not get gigabit in KS-1).

@PineappleM said: I just didn't know KS-1 was special in being the exception

I believe it is more common (or universal?) to see KS-1 limited to actual 100 Mbit at the NIC. So not only you don't get any faster download, both directions are limited to ~93 Mbit each due to overheads. Of course this might change over time if they upgrade switches from 100 Mbit and/or don't bother to put the link rate speed limit on new ones anymore (relying on upload speed cap on the routers instead, like they do with other servers).

That's not true for SoYouStart, from my experience, at least with the Xeon D servers. I've always got 250/250.

That definitely isn’t right, OVH never cap the download and that’s been confirmed by support.

They added two SYS GAME servers to the promotion now. Instead of a monthly price cut, they just waived the one-time setup fees instead. I'd hardly call these good deals given that the GAME-1 and Rise-GAME servers are almost half price with better bandwidth quotas, unless you really need the 4 TB HDD.

    CPU : Intel i7-7700K - 4c/8t - 4.2 GHz/4.5 GHz
    Storage : 2 x 480 GB SSD SATA Soft RAID + 1 x 4 TB HDD SATA Soft RAID
Public bandwidth : 250 Mbps (limited to 10 TB)

32 GB model: $80/mo (no setup)
64 GB model: $92/mo (no setup)
    APAC only (Singapore & Australia)

It's worth noting that, just 3 months ago, OVH had these servers on sale where they both waived the setup fee AND gave a 50+% discount for a 12 month commitment, with the 32 GB model coming all the way down to $40/mo for 12 mo. Now THAT was a great deal. This is more of a scam trap.

OVH should just the remove setup fees on all but the almost-always-sold-out models if they really want to unload their inventory, rather than resort to clumsy promotions that look like a rushed afterthought.

  • emghemgh Member

OVH should never remove the setup fees on these cheap deals

After costs, their profit from the GAME-1 at 55 % off must be crazy minimal, I’d guess maximum a few dollars a month

Even with one submitted ticket, their profit is probably vanished for months

The setup fee is likely about two years worth of profit for them, if I were to guess

And with people chasing the low monthly price because they’ll ”keep it for a long time” but then switching after 2-3 months, that’s a win-win

OVH isn’t making a lot of money, they operate on tiny margins. They’re the last company that should decrease their margins even more

So if you advocate for them removing setup fees, expect higher renewals

    Thanked by 1PineappleM
  • I can't imagine that sitting on inventory is any cheaper, i.e. sit on a SYS-GAME that's powered on idling for 3+ months that's not generating any revenue. Moreover, if people switching after 2-3 months is such a problem, then they should incentivize waiving the setup fee for commitments of 6-12 mo (by default there are no discounts for commitments on the Eco line so there's no incentive to choose anything more than monthly).

The fact that they even drop these deals, albeit for very specific models (i.e. not an across-the-board sale), suggests to me that they are sitting on loads of inventory that they want to get clients on. Also, Hetzner has even cheaper servers and no setup or at least very modest setup (40 euros for an 80 euro server, not $60 for a $20/mo server).

There's room for OVH to improve how much they charge for their services even if it's not abolishing the setup fee entirely.
