What nameservers you using? (cat /etc/resolv.conf)
    Can you ping ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu? (ping ftp.gtlib.gatech.edu .c 5)

  • does it work if you turn off IPv6?

    Google DNS

And I can on my home computer but not on the VPS.

I removed it from the source list, but it still tries, even after an apt-get update

Hmmm, I don't get it... downloading packages? Why you just don't change that mirror?

EDIT: I think you didn't removed it at all..

  • @Yomero, I removed the mirror all together and it still tries to grab from it.

  • OS reload fixed it

  • Edit /etc/gai.conf
    uncomment (or add) this line:

    precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100

just wait and forget -its working if you wait

  • Just out of curiosity, what's the ping time from your VPS to that Cachefly server?

  • Don't act like I didn't say it before... RamHost is awesome.

  • LOL windows solutions... format FTW...

Btw, there is a folder /etc/apt/sources.list.d where you can find more mirrors. Maybe that caused the persistent mirror or sth

Yeah u need to clear out the cached sources files. Debian is herp deep like that.

(They aren't called cache files but that's essentially what they do)

Our Kansas City gear hits Cachefly in Chicago, so it'd be about 10 ms.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. Glad the issue was easily fixed.

In my case, the dead ftp link was found sources.list. http://http.debian.net/ explains how to fix that.
