For a storage server with 4 HDDs. RAID 6 or 10? Ext4 or XFS?

Hi all,

I need to buy a dedicated server to be used only as a storage/backup server (acronis and rsync) and I will get a Hetzner server with 4x6TB HDD drives + Software RAID.

What RAID should I use? RAID 6 or RAID 10?

Also, in terms of filesystem, since the server will use CentOS 7 and it’s for storage, Ext4 or XFS?

I always heard that RAID 6 is better for storage, but with 4 drives the space available is the same as RAID 10.

Thanks

RAID10 will be faster, no parity check calculation but the risk is a bit higher to lose all your data if two disks fail and they happen to be on the same "RAID1" part of the RAID10. RAID6 will handle any 2-disk failure.
You could also consider ZFS depending on the hw specs and your appetite to run something a bit more complex.
