.ga domain names soon to return to Gabonese management

03/06/2023 Gabon took over the management of the .GA domain, removing several million domains in the process. Even people who bought their GA domain lost it. Freenom deadpooled!

I imagine a lot of them will, mostly the two letter extensions. Keep an eye on Namepros.com, you'll probably hear about it there first.

7 million .ga domains to be deleted, mostly all registered through Freenom.
paid .ga domains registered elsewhere may not be in this list.

Some people reported that now they deleted all domains, because they don't have list of paid registered domains and also user data. You can find information online that people are crying that they paid for funny .GA domain for 10/y in other company and now it is gone.

If the Gabonese government wanted to make some money, why not email all 7 million registered domain owners (I'm one) and offer our first year at $5 US or whatever and give us a chance to save and pay for our domain. Canceling 7 million domains that could generate real money is ridiculous.

  • They wanted fresh start I guess.

    .ga official press release, details:
    https://www.mon.ga/english.html

I have only two .tk with Freenom directly. I was able to renew one today with them.

  • This is garbage.

Some notes about flushing GA zone:

    • Whois ga server address: WEB+WHOIS whois.nic.ga (use whois -h whois.nic.ga some.domain.ga).
    • Domains like TELE.GA got auto-transition. They were registered via Gandi (was not Freenom reseller? huh).
Now they have whois "Date de création:              2023-06-05T00:00:00Z". Exactly at midnight.

    • Domain like GOOGLE.GA got VIP service. Engineer reported the problem at Mon Jun 5 02:33:22 UTC 2023 (https://lists.dns-oarc.net/pipermail/dns-operations/2023-June/022083.html).
Less than 48 hours they've registered a new registrar(!) Markmonitor at ANINF (There is no such registrar in the list https://www.mon.ga/english.html). Faster than light.

    • Domains like ASTI.GA spent around $25(year fee) + $50(corporate fee for manual processing) and registered domain via Gandi in a small window of time.

    • Registrar Netim: $18 till end of month, then $26 per year.
    • All other PAID ga domains squatted via Safe Names registrar around 2023-06-06 15:00. They pointed a delegation on one (sick!) NS server ns03.freenom.com
So you can switch delegation at freenom's dashboard to "Use default nameservers (Freenom Nameservers)" and set up needed records (only A, AAAA, CNAME, TXT, MX, LOC, NAPTR, RP).

    • You cannot register at Safe Names site: Error "Update Unsuccessful Please fix the missing or invalid Data". All data is filled in.
      Awesome businass.

    • All registered domains have 06.06.2023 - 06.06.2024, 1 year registration.

    • Same [s]sh..[/s] with ML zone. https://agetic.gouv.ml/note-dinformation-relative-au-rapatriement-de-la-gestion-technique-du-point-ml/
They wanted to switch at the end of March 2023, but nothing seems to have happened.

Do they have freenom database or how exactly for them to establish that you're the one who own domain? And there would be disputes for sure.

    They have. See post above

It's a good idea in general to check what government is behind your nifty domain idea. You probably don't want to become a nine-figure company that can be flicked off in an instant by some crazy entity like the Libyan government.

06.06 - PAID domains squatted by safenames (with 15 hrs delay)
12.06 - they pointed proper (before flushing) NS records. And broke it again, cause they took TOO old ns records (I've pointed to improper he.net servers once, with changing to proper in end)
    Nobody answers, so
    PRETY GOOD JOB SO FAR

ML was mentioned, about others: https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2023/05/26/het-riool-van-het-internet-loopt-via-amsterdam-en-tokelau-domeinen-die-gratis-weggegeven-worden-trekken-ellende-aan-a4165670

    or
    nrc.nl##body:remove-attr(/data-paywall-article-expire-days/)
    )

Looks like the domain business of freenom is dead.

The official reason was that Freenom has not shared its Zone file with the Gabonese authorities.
