RamNode vs. Hetzner

edited May 2023 in General

Just a theoretical question. I am with RamNode for 10+ years. No complains at all with them! Very smooth!

My plan ist KVM SSD VPS 2048MB for roughly $11/month

Hetzner has like CAX21 NVMe SSD 8Gb RAM for € 7.73/month

That's a little bit cheaper for 4 times the RAM.

My VPS has just a few websites. I am using Virtualmin, which is stuck on a older version because the RamNode VPS was before 1Gb and CentOS higher version want more.

Is it worthwhile switching?

Yes, Hetzner is production-ready and also has 2 US locations. But keep in mind that CAX is ARM CPU.

I saw that, but lack the understanding what it means. I presume "performance" (obviously).

All my sites are sort of very low activity. 2 domains have email. No Wordpress, but another CMS (Bolt). I could make them static though.

  • Hetzner charges hourly so spin an instance up and try yourself.

Note that those Arm instances are currently only available in Germany.

CAX is ARM-based. CPX is x86.

    Different CPUs.

You can run Linux on either.

Where people run into problems with ARM is when they have software that doesn't support it. cPanel is a notable example.

@AXYZE did a great video comparing CAX vs CPX on Hetzner:

Ramnode days is long gone. Hetzner all the way.

My idea is CentOS, or Debian - and then Webmin/Virtualmin on top. All my emails are in there. If that works I should probably ask in the Webmin community.

Agree, Ramnode went bad since the introduction of their cloud product on a dedicated platform.

Webmin works fine on ARM. Debian works fine on ARM. Pretty much everything works exactly the same.

    Hetzner of course :)
    Way premium and stable.

That beauty would be in Nuremberg, but what kind of server it is ?

  • hyena56hyena56 Member

If it will be for production, I'd rather choose Hetzner between the two. Hetzner is way more cheaper and has a better connectivity and peerings too.

  • Ofcourse it should be Hetzner, premium hardware and great network.

Hetzner! Never got any issues with them since.

    Hetzner or Hetzner.

  • @nick_ said: Hetzner is production-ready

Nothing without a heavy anti-ddos is production ready in my eyes.
Hetzner ddos-protection is non-existent, do not know about RamNode.

I've used RamNode in production on and off for years. Always a reliable service and never any problems.

  • Maybe you can look at contabo

    I guess he couldn't clarify
I guess your current state looks like this
I guess he has guessed your status :D

    Also, I always check ramnode
But in 8 years I have never placed an order
The closest I've ever come to placing an order was after jumping to paypal, and I just closed the page, which was 6 years ago if I remember correctly.

Maybe it's the curse of ramnode

You are obsolete in compare to hetzner. Both price and technical side.

    Fair :)

  • Hetzner CAX ARM based with Directadmin for DNS and Mail Server

  • RamNode was actually the first LET server I used before I even knew of LET, hosted a couple of popular gmod servers with them.

    But:

That was long ago. Since then, the company was sold and seems to be stagnant. It doesn't seem to be getting the attention it needs, and it's definitely getting lost in time like most sold companies without any real drive or vision do.

    Fuck Hetzner.

Im quite disappointed with Hetzner ip blocks.. Cant use them for vpn, lot of geolocation issues.. I have tried lot of ip blocks and on most of them google thinks ip is from Iran and every search is with arab letters also youtube videos are primary arabic searches.

    he he he

Thats because we "Arabs" have many Hetzner's server used only for VPN o:)

  • Said goodbye to Ramnode after 10 years. I'll admit that they were really stable, but after the 25% price hike (which is probably justified after 10 years) I've moved to another provider

  • I am still uncertain and would love to get some feedback. Anyway, I read here somewhere that Hetzner has no Black Fridays specials, so no urgency then.

Right now I have Ramnode Standard KVM 2Gb for $12/m. As written before, no issues with performance. O/S is an old CentOS (6.10).
I like to get a bit more RAM for a 32 bit OS, Debian or whatever. I run a few low traffic company sites (no wordpress) plus mail.

I believe a 4Gb shared CPU will do. Is ARM ok?
