Copy and pasting parts of code you find on the net doesn't constitute developing your own script. The people who have been kind enough to show the exploits are trying to help you.
You should look up basic principles when files from unknowns are being uploaded to a system. The basics are uploading a shell where they can run commands through your php script. This should be disabled or at least contained and limit the reach of your user running the script. php shouldn't even have exec capabilities if all you're doing is image hosting.
I'm no coder. At most I'm a scripter, but these are basics which you should have at least read about if you started thinking about this project.
