Suggestions for VPS Host for Nextcloud clients with Small OS disk & larger storage volume for data

almtqnalmtqn Member

Hi, I'm looking for a preferably European based VPS host that offers suitable VPS solutions that I can use for my clients for Nextcloud. I'd need about 2-4CPU / 4-8GB RAM / a small OS SSD - around 40GB maybe & then options for data storage - say 500GB, then 1TB.

I'd like to make sure the data storage is performant enough though. Dedicated servers are way out of my budget. I'm currently using a Hetzner Cloud CPX21 for a client that doesn't have much data but their Block Storage Volumes are too expensive for more data. I'm using Nextcloud AIO for the nextcloud install. Something like a Hetzner Storage share (although very cost-effective) is not suitable - I need to have Nextcloud installed & managed & backed up by myself.

Any suggestions?

    AFAIK you can purchase a Hetzner Storage Box and mount it to your Hetzner server, cheaper than a storage share. Not sure about latency or speeds, my experience wasn't that good (connecting from California, so take it with a grain of salt).

    If you want similar cloud VPS stuff like Hetzner with hourly billing etc. the good stuff, then at least Vultr has good HDD based block storage

    Of course you'd need to stress test it if it suits your needs but for me it's been good performance and it's nicely priced at 0,025$/GB (pricing not visible on their public site for the HDD storage, you need to login to customer panel)

  • HostHatch if their locations work. You get an NVMe for your OS and a 1TB connected together over private VLAN.

    BuyVM "LU RYZEN KVM 8GB" VPS in Luxembourg+512/1TB Storage Slab would run you $35-40/mo ($30 for VPS, $5 for 512gb/$10 for 1tb) - but it covers all of your bases. You can also offload your SQL for another $1/mo if you're so inclined.

    A BuyVM' slice coupled with a storage slab look like just the kind of solution/price-point that I need, but unfortunatey they seem to be out of stock except for HIGH VOLUME VPS PLANS which are little out of my range.

    Can you give me some more details on the block storage type & IO/network speeds?

  • You can add s3 (or alterative) as you nextcloud backend. Check https://www.backblaze.com/b2/cloud-storage-pricing.html

    Always you can just buy hetzner stoarge box (3.20€/m/1TB) and mount it via smb do your hetzner server. https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box

    Fastpipe -> Cloud SE-4 + Block Storage
    7,5 + 4,5 = 12 €/m / 500 GB

    NVME SSD for the O/S, and local RAID-6 SAS for the block storage.
    Performance and speeds will vary based on hardware node, and service location.
