Service closure for So you Start ARM solutions
Got this email today:
OVHcloud launched the So you Start ARM solution seven years ago, with the aim of offering storage-oriented servers at an affordable price. After halting sales for them in 2019, we are sorry to announce that we have taken the decision to remove these servers from operation.
This decision has been made because support will be discontinued for the Debian 9 operating system for ARM. As a consequence, we will no longer be able to ensure a sufficient level of service, which means we will need to close the service in its entirety.
We are writing to inform you that our So you Start ARM Bare Metal server ranges will close completely on 31 May 2023. From this date onwards, your So you Start ARM Bare Metal servers will no longer be functional.
Please migrate your data to other services as soon as possible. To assist you with this process, we have detailed several migration options here:
https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-ie/lp/sys-arm-migration
You can also use the promo codes below for these migration options. You need an OVHcloud account to use this service.
On OVHcloud Eco Dedicated Servers (Kimsufi, So you Start, excluding limited-edition models) :
No setup fees, with the one-time code*: cactus
or
25% off (valid for 12 months), with the one-time code*: cactus
On OVHcloud Public Cloud Object Storage instances :
Create your first project and get €200** free credit now
For any questions on the reversibility of our services, you can read the following document: https://docs.ovh.com/gb/en/reversibility/dedicated-servers-reversibility-policy/. Our technical support team is also available to assist you with this migration. Finally, if you experience any difficulties or doubts when it comes to managing or securing your servers, we recommend contacting a specialist provider.
Thank you for choosing OVHcloud.

They removed those boxes from the SYS website over three years ago; finally putting them down.
9 EUR/mo for 4T of storage, with unmetered 250Mbps bandwidth was fantastic. CPU was quite lacklustre but it was great for storage and even as a seedbox.
None of OVH current offerings beat that kind of value unfortunately.
Edit: Doesn't seem like you can just create an account to use the code; not eligible.
Hey, such a bad news ...
Mine was 1G up/down with 2T disk for ~6€/month.
Unbeatable.
Does it mean that the free ARM Oracle will also be canceled at any time??
What does OVH have to do with Oracle here?
And yes if you read up on experiences with the Oracle free tier they have been shutting off machines without notice for some time. They even have a resource reclamation clause: https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/FreeTier/freetier_topic-Always_Free_Resources.htm
Maybe it means that ARM is not suitable for the data center
Received e-mail too. "Nice" Easter present from OVH... effectively changed my mood from great to shit. I have pre-paid that arm server for 1 year. I will not get my money back ? And server will be switched off in day they wrote anyway?
They know damn well, that you can use Debian 11 in those servers easily. Install 9, upgrade from CLI to 10, then to 11. EASY!
Free ARM Oracle service can be reclaimed at any time by Oracle as they did modified T&Cs and if your server is not used so they do have right to claim it back.
Kernel was always a shit show on those servers, did they ever get mainline support?
Some as you !
I have prepaid it for 1 year and they didn't mention if they will refund the remaining months or what exactly
I really doubt that OVH aren't going to reimburse you for the prepaid months. Just send them a ticket and I'm sure it will be sorted.
Sad news. Been using it since launched. 6 TB 500mbits real speed unlimited, a beast as LTS seedbox for 12£ for many years until they increased couple of pounds last year. Now i have to move to kimsufi 100mbps or shitty online.net/oneprovider lol Very sad day fellas
**Your So you Start ARM server xxxxxxxxxx will reach its end-of-life on 31/05/2023. **
Today is 01/06/2023 and server still running (useless for me now of course, all data moved, reinstall done, etc)
Typical OVH?
Nah, we announced the discontinuation of our Xen-PV servers in March for the 1st of May. They are still up because people are so slow to migrate to a 4 times bigger server and 20% cheaper. Never underestimate human laziness...
Besides, wtf has this got to do with Debian? Can't they run something else, assuming Debian doesn't support ARM anymore (it does!)?
Free server with 500 Mbit, get some Tor Relay going while it lasts.
So You Stop
Yes, So I Stop
After creating ticket finally they removed server and issued refund in to ... their so called prepaid account. Lets see if real refund from there will not require to create another ticket as my payment option was paypal. No idea if refunds from ovh to paypal works and how fast it will be
4 day later refund still shows on soyoustart "prepaid account" and not transfered out to original funding source as requested by me. Will wait 1 week and make another support ticket.......
This has nothing to do with debian it still supports arm in 32bit and 64bit builds.
Some as you
Today they sent me this useless email with text:
I am more interested when my refund will land back in original funding source, lol.
I dont understand ovh at all. Today (after waiting and waiting) their so called "refund order" shows as completed in soyoustart manager, but prepaid acc still shows it there (not paid out to original funding source - paypal). wtf.
Sometimes they can take 2 months to refund, it happened to me once as well. You can either wait or try calling and they usually work faster if you call them.
@momkin: thanks for update.
No info yet from them on my case. Last info was that somebody from support got assigned to my case, lol. Will see if I will receive same answer.
OVH getting weirder and weirder. I lost hope to get my money back. Few days ago they asked to provide info for SEPA transfer, which I did.
Today I received e-mail (in french, of course why not dear OVH....) with title:

With translation (I dont speak french) I understand that email is about link to accept (sign) SEPA direct debit mandate - which in my understanding is only needed when company wants to TAKE money from customer by setting up some payment schedule, not other way around.
I have not clicked that button link.
had 2 of the 6tb machines. worked great! had 500 each way.
Still waiting for refund. Last they replied that refund issued and will take up to 15 days to receive. What a joke.
