Backup/monitor my cheap VPS

Hi!

I’m looking for a simple and free way to backup and monitor my cheap Racknerd VPS. It’s running a NGINX proxy and I would like to have the VPS be backuped to my Hetzner Storage Box. A simple way to restore the backup would be awesome.

Besides that it would be nice to get a notification when there was an issue doing the backup. I have BetterUptime and could use that for health checks, but it won’t do logging I believe.

How are you doing this?

Thank you!

  • why does racknerd not have snapshots?

But what to backup on the VPS and how to restore when the VPS goes offline?

Because you don't pay them enough for that.

That, no doubt, and even if they did off-provider backups are an essential thing.
(and specifically what the thread starter was asking about)

    You're seriously asking that?

  • I use restic for backups and Healthchecks.io to be notified if a backup is missed etc.

yeah if he's asking that kind of question it's gonna be hard...

  • ChatGPT seems to be able to generate a script for stuff like that these days.

I’m afraid so :( Let me ask ChatGPT and Bing some questions on how to backup using BorgBackup or rsync and how to restore in case of and event.

The thing is automated backups are easy but automated restoration, i honestly don't recommend that, better to restore things manually. And it's not hard if you know the basic how to linux i don't think you will get into trouble in this aspect.

If Racknerd does not have ready-made solutions, then we advise you to run initial configuration via Docker or Ansible, all variable data backup via rsnapshot.
