Looking for a dedicated server in Germany or nearby

Hi,

I am looking for a dedicated server with these specs:

  • must have a CPU fast enough for Plex streaming (just one user, and 1080p quality is more than enough); the server will host several applications (some Rails apps, Nextcloud and other things) but also the Plex/*arr stack just for myself
  • 32 GB of RAM
  • at least 4 TB of HDD storage for media and Nextcloud data, preferably 2 disks so I can stripe them for better performance
  • optionally one SSD for the OS and apps
  • 1Gbps connection (but will evaluate other options if particularly convenient)
  • location: preferably in Frankfurt, Germany or other Germany location. If not possible, any other decent location in Europe.
  • budget: Ideally under 30 euros per month. Can sacrifice port speed if needed.

Does anyone know of any good options with these specs and budget? Thanks!

  • For reference, the best I found so far on OneProvider.com

    • Xeon E3-1240 CPU 4c/8t
    • 24 GB RAM
    • 2x2TB HDD storage
    • 1Gbps port

25 euros per month. Is there anything better than this?

    We could offer following configuration:

    Dell R210-2 1x Intel Quad-Core Xeon E3-1230v2 - 4 cores - 3.30 Ghz
    32GB DDR3 Frankfurt (FRA-01) LFF: 2x 4TB SATA HDD
    1 x 1000Mbps Full-Duplex
    30 TB
    IPv4: 1

For €53.09 per month and with €55 setup fee. Setup time - few working days.
Server come with IPMI and server management panel. This plan not listed on site, so you will need open request in your personal cabinet.

Or, we could offer you current server per sale:

    1 x Hexa Core Xeon E-2286G / 16 GB RAM / 2 x 1 TB SATA
6 cores @ 4 GHz with HT support
    Instant activation
    16 ГБ DDR4 RAM
    2 x 1 ТБ SATA STORAGE
    30 TB traffic @ 1 Gbit

    71.1 € /month (with discount 10%) or 663.6 € (with 30% discount) / year

    Looking glass: https://lg.rustelekom.net

  • Anyone with suggestions before I go with that one?

Dusseldorf? If yes then go buy from Myloc or their sister brands and you will get better deals as Oneprovider is just a reseller. I Also have their reseller status and get huge discount but never did because of personal experience with them. Their support is bad.. really bad

I checked them but they didn't have cheaper plans like OneProvider

I'll be honest: the price you're looking for probably doesn't even cover power these days. You're probably best going with the deal you found because they're probably losing money on it so you won't find much competition.

    You should ask STHosting @sthosting

Yeah I went with that one. I also think it would be very hard to find a better deal.

Yeah.. I tried but it's difficult to find a PaaS that is not too expensive and it will never be as flexible as a docker compose unfortunately.

@sthosting were among the first providers I checked but price was a problem.

I went with a OneProvider deal which was just 19 euros per month, no set up fees etc. The only downside is the 100Mbps speed but it's OK at that price.

Hi, I did check your website because I was very happy with your service in the past but I have a tight budget for this unfortunately :) Those are pretty dope deals nonetheless.

  • The back and forth between self-hosted and PaaS/SaaS is real :D I remember when you canceled the GreenCloudvps since you didn't want to self-host anymore. Now it seems something made you reconsider. I feel your struggle. A hosted solution usually costs more money, but gives you convenience in exchange for a (often) hefty price. A self-hosted solution gives you more freedom, but costs you (life-)time. I wish you best of luck in finding a solution that meets all your needs.

The struggle is indeed real! :joy: I can't help it. But this time the problem is that I wanted to set up a few things that require UDP and other stuff which doesn't work out of the box on fly.io, which is the PaaS I switched several apps to. I don't think there is a PaaS which allows the kind of flexibility that I can have with Docker Compose..
