Is there a "Ubuntu 12.04" and a "Ubuntu 12.04 LTS", or is the same thing?

(If I select "Ubuntu 12.04" as the distro for a VM, is this the LTS release?)

I said it was a newbie question!!

Thanks :)

  • There is only one 12.04 and it can be LTS or not. Dont know if 12.04 is one of these LTS.

    Bte LTS: long term support

  • 12.04 is LTS just like 10.04 was and 14.04 will be.

Yes I saw that page, it didn't really answer the question. No matter, confusion resolved.

  • They are the same exact thing

i wanted to say that, but some say i am a smart ass, so i am glad you said it,

i use ubuntu 12.04 LTS i know they have a 12.04 LTS minimal

The Minimal CD will download packages from online archives at installation time instead of providing them on the install CD itself.

The site cited above does indeed answer all questions related to any version of Ubuntu and its type of being a LTS-version or not. The label LTS clarifies if a version has extended support, hence the name. There is only one 12.04. And this has extended support. Therefore it is a LTS-version.

A complete different subject is how a Ubuntu version gets distributed. You can download a full DVD-image, a netinstall, a minimal image. This, however, has nothing to do with the question of how long the team at Ubuntu will support a specific version (LTS or not).

  • Another question:

Does Ubuntu 12.04 LTS stay with PHP 5.3 even after 5.3 goes end-of-life?

I'm not asking how to update PHP... I'm wondering if the Ubuntu/Debian package maintainers backport security fixes to PHP 5.3, like is done with CentOS.

  • Yes they do. It's part of main. Double check using

    apt-cache show php5 | grep ^Supported

  • Thanks @tchen, that's what I wanted to hear :)
