Personal Web Proxy Questions

I'm wanting to setup a personal web proxy, to browse sites and possibly to watch video as well.

What server requirements do you think I'd need?
I was thinking 1 or 2 gigs of ram. Would that suffice?
If given the choice between 1 gig of ram with 2xCPU usage or 2 gigs of ram with 1xCPU usage, which would be more beneficial for a web proxy?

Also, which web proxy would you suggest using?

Thanks for any info and advice on this.

Http Proxy or VPN? For http proxy I use squid, for VPN wireguard. In either case they require very little resources.

As an example I'm running a VPN & Http Proxy on BuyVMs cheapest package ($3.50/mo), even with 1 core and 1gb RAM it's overkill but worth it because of the unmetered bandwidth and very stable service. Currently watching a twitch stream through the VPN (14mbps bitrate) and browsing via the squid proxy... the CPU core load is at 2% & RAM usage 177MB.

Before that I was using a cheaper VPS (1 core E5-1650 v3, 256MB RAM) and that was fine too. I doubt 1 core 2gb vs 2 core 1gb would make any noticeable difference just for browsing / watching videos because the requirements are so low in the first place, just make sure it has enough traffic allowance

  • Thanks @ptreja

I definitely want to setup a http proxy, and then maybe a vpn as well.
If requirements are that low, I think I'll start with 512 or a gig, no need to go higher. I appreciate the info, it really helped.

the http program occupy less 50MB,but it depends on what you are visiting
For example, browsing the web and watching the 4k videos surely consume different CPU and memory, as same as your computer/phone.

  • try 3proxy, small footprint

  • Why would you run squid proxy (or similar) these days?
