I am using Storj from too long (don't really remember). i am using storj cli everyday (s3). Works pretty good! never had any problem.
Are you getting good speeds in transfers?
My only feedback is that downloading from Storj S3 was much slower than Scaleway, Backblaze, Cloudflare
upload from my vps is around 23MB/s and download to my pc, i can't really tell because my internet speed is slow. Never tried or have any task to download from storj to my vps.
My experience playing with storj (been a while though so maybe they've gotten better) is that.
It sucks.
Like not in a negative way, but it's not useful for me and for what I do.
It just leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to downloading the data/file. There are much better alternative solutions that are comparable in costs and/or time than dealing with storj.
My working stays in the limit of 150gb free
so can't really provide a solid review with prizing etc. But i did share my experience i had.
and that's fine!
I think the theory behind Storj is fairly sound, but the realistic usability of it is fairly limited and honestly... other solutions are just better. Also my experience is just one out of many (just like yours).
What are alternatives that are similar in features, like decentralized cloud storage?
Honestly I don't use decentralized cloud storage. that's pretty much the result. I use straight up centralized cloud storage solutions still because, at the end of the day, it just works better.
But also, it really depends on what you're looking for and what design parameters you need. For me, going back to blob storage or a SSD storage array still satisfied my requirements. I simply was testing out storj as an alternative.
I am using Storj to automatically backup a database in daily basis. I have nothing to complaint, since its works flawlessly for more than a year. My backup script integrated with Telegram bot. Once backup successfully created and uploaded, it will send notification and URL to download backup.
My issue with it is that the speed is not consistent. One day it's fast, the next it can be very slow.
Depends on your server too, my 2 servers have different speed using storj, 1 is giving 23+ MB/s other is at 5MB/s (sometimes 12-17 MB/s)
To get the maximum speed you need to use the native uplink protocol.
Using Storj via the S3 compatible API will always be slower.
When using the native protocol I usually get full speed of the uplink (Gbps). The downsides is the server needs to be powerful, it reaches 100% instantly due to the encryption process. Also the amount of data to be uploaded is roughly 2.5 times the file size due to the sharding and redundancy involved.
When using via the S3 gateway, a powerful server isn't required as the encryption+sharding is done by the gateway and amount of data to be uploaded is the same as file size. However the secret keys need to be shared with the gateway.
Storj hangs when used with Slimjet to upload a file. I have been using Icedrive, Pcloud, Filen, Sync, etc instead.
I want to use it but don't know how as the free account is generous with the 150GB. What application do people use to upload and download from it?
I've been trying idrive e2 for about 4 days for my personal backup, and storage upstream for my mastodon instance. It works nicely so far. However it's not decentralized like storj.
I'd jump in backblaze b2, but for most stupid reasons it's banned in my country.
Storj provides free 150GB storage? So why pay to other cloud like pcloud, filen, google drive, etc if we get free 150GB? Or Storj features/function is different from them?
It doesn't work well with browser upload (slimjet hangs) and they have no desktop application like pcloud/sync to upload files either.
FileZilla has native support for Storj.

about storj, how does overages above 150GB work? they say there are no minimums so if i do 152GB, will i be charged for only 2GBs 0.004*2=$0.008? + bandwidth ?
They give users a perpetual $1.65 coupon to constitute the free plan. If you have no payment method on file (or don't have enough STORJ token balance), you're limited to 150GB in storage and bandwidth.
You may also have to account for the 'segments' you use as well, but they are hardly a cost.
