I mean something to manage zones for my domains

  • You can't have a secondary NS in such way, CF asks you to remove all records and
keep only their 2 servers there, otherwise it will complain and not work as expected.

Why would you need it? Not like they had considerable outages in the last 10 years, overall
it is way more than 99.999%, especially if you are using the free plan.

Just in case something bad happens and my account gets closed or stuff like that. I have been using them for years, it would be just to be safe

  • You could just copy all your settings to another provider. Then if cloudflare outage occurs, you can just change your nameservers at the new registrar to point to your new dns provider. Cloudflare allows secondary DNS if you have the enterprise plan. Free plan doesn't have an automated approach

  • So it's not called secondary, it's called just an alternative. Primary and secondary are DNS terms,
and means they are both active at the same time.
    I'd say CloudNS and dns.he.net.

  • Oh wait, it’s not just dns. My domains are registered with Cloudflare registrar. Can a registrar ferminate a service for whatever reason and leave you without access to your domains? I have never had problems, but often I read of people seeing their accounts closed with various companies

  • Not for "whatever reason" but for abuse or ToS violation. If you aren't into anything shady,
you should be fine. The people you see terminated somewhere either didn't pay on time or
    very well deserved it.

If Cloudflare is your domain registrar, then you are required to use Cloudflare DNS services for those domains. It is the "deal with the devil" you must make if you want Cloudflare's low prices for domain registrations, transfers, and renewals.

The answers to your question about losing control of your own domain registrations is complicated, and I would prefer to leave it to others. I want a domain registrar I can trust, too.

Just another vendor to consider.....I've used easydns.com for 20 years. Their stuff works. Their api works.

If Cloudflare is your domain registrar, and you are scared of something, you should transfer your domain to any reputed registrar like Godaddy.

According of ICANN rules, no register can deny domain transfer. All you need is domain auth code and unlocked domain status. And a domain can be transferred only after 60 days of registration.

Can a registrar ferminate a service for whatever reason and leave you without access to your domains?

Registrar can suspend your domain if your violate certain conditions like, incorrect whois details. But they should not suspend your domain for not using their dns service.
