Not very demanding, but widespread on many many servers: SETI.
Our "team" got very high in the rankings, which generated a lot of excitement and enthusiasm within the company. That is how senior management finally found out that we were running SETI, 24x7 on every CPU in the company. The power savings was huge as soon as we shut it down. Management was gracious enough to allow us to continue running SETI on a few token systems, just to keep our name in the SETI rankings list.
