Any storage dedis or VPS which would be cheaper than Hetzner Storage Box?

Storage Box is priced well but I was wondering if there was an even better option for lots of storage by using a vps or dedi instead?

The one thing that Hetzner offers which would likely be difficult to find on a VPS/Dedicated server is the unlimited traffic. You might be able to find servers with 20TB of SATA storage (in some form, non-RAID) for instance but the mix of disk+traffic going to be tricky.

But in terms of pure storage, is there a non Hetzner server even with crappy CPU but with plenty of storage that could be used to store media for ultra cheap?

    Make home build then.

Depending on how much you would be after, for instance we could offer a dedicated box:

    • 8x 6TB SATA (48TB Total - No raid or RAID config depending on your needs)
    • 10TB Bandwidth with 1Gbps network
    • UK Data Centre

For £99/month (ex VAT) but I am sure some people could provide cheaper. Note above is a quick quote, if anyone wanted more info happy to work something out in more detail

    Thanked by 1dedicados
  • I would need around 10-20TB. I was thinking of a storage server even with a crappy CPU because I could use a CPX31 from Hetzner for Plex using the storage for the media. I tested this with an all Hetzner setup and it works more or less. What can you offer for 10-20TB?

GorillaServers sister or sub-brand of WebNX do have very affordable storage dedicated servers in Utah DC, even the WebNX offerings are great for a US location. Haven't seen anything close to that (in US). Check their WHT offers.

Thanks, but I'm in Europe so an European location would be better.

  • Why not use GDrive?

  • I just got this from OneProvider

    Location: Lille - FR
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 v2 - 3.4 GHz - 4 core(s)
    RAM: 32GB - DDR3
    Disks: 3x 2TB (HDD SATA)
    Bandwidth: Unmetered @ 100Mbps

    For just 19e/mo.

I can do with 6TB if I just delete stuff as soon as I watch it so no big deal. Reviews about this provider are mixed, but it's quite cheap so worth trying. It's a dedicated server so many of the typical issues people have are not a problem. Let's see..

  • Well, GDrive would cost you like 23 Eur....

But I would need a server still at the same time

The prices are extremely cheap indeed. If possible, please post a review of their server here after a while.

Also, could you do a yabs benchmark test?

Sure, will do it in a few weeks. The first impressions are good. Delivery took only 15 minutes despite they say 1-3 business days. The control panel is pretty functional and installing the server, configuring the RAID etc couldn't be easier.

    I'll do a YABS shortly.

Here you are. The only thing running on the server is rsync transferring stuff from the old one. Nothing else. BTW I checked the IP on Maxmind and it's owned by OVH.

The model you got is KS-16, it's a pretty solid Kimsufi model if you don't mind the bandwidth limitations.

    What an interesting development.

I just got this from OneProvider

    Location: Lille - FR
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 v2 - 3.4 GHz - 4 core(s)
    RAM: 32GB - DDR3
    Disks: 3x 2TB (HDD SATA)
    Bandwidth: Unmetered @ 100Mbps

    For just 19e/mo.

I can do with 6TB if I just delete stuff as soon as I watch it so no big deal. Reviews about this provider are mixed, but it's quite cheap so worth trying. It's a dedicated server so many of the typical issues people have are not a problem. Let's see..

I didn't know that OneProvider sold Kimsufi servers now, but just for the record this server would cost €19.99 directly from Kimsufi.

The model you got is KS-16, it's a pretty solid Kimsufi model if you don't mind the bandwidth limitations.

    What an interesting development.

With Kimsufi I'd have to pay the VAT :)

they just resold a kimsufi server to you. :)

It's cheaper for me since it's a Canadian company and I don't pay their VAT.

The prices are extremely cheap indeed. If possible, please post a review of their server here after a while.

Also, could you do a yabs benchmark test?

Here you are. The only thing running on the server is rsync transferring stuff from the old one. Nothing else. BTW I checked the IP on Maxmind and it's owned by OVH.

You can also avoid paying VAT at OVH if you use the American website (USD) to sign up and purchase. Though, I haven't tested that since that switch to eco cloud.

Regardless you got a solid price for it. I looked on the Oneprovider website but couldn't seen to find it oddly.

Could you do raid 5 or raid 6 on these 3x2tb hdd?

  • Hetzner Storage Box offers something meaningful, for example, it is managed, Riad array storage.

And he's ready to use out of the box, providing the usual connectivity options including SMB and Webdav.

That's something that the storage server option alone doesn't offer.

However, if you just want to go with the economical pricing model, I would say hetzner cloud mounted GDrive gives you almost unlimited storage.

But in any case, the Hetzner Storage Box is, in a way, irreplaceable!
