I have a PhD in computer networking.
Nevertheless, during the six-week gap between my graduation and the first day at a research institution, my mother told me to apply for a job of repositioning bicycles on the street, instead of sitting on the couch watching television.
Instead, I went to two universities to speak about what's in my dissertation and got paid ¥3000 in a week, same as moving bicycles for two weeks, and that shut my mother up.

I have a degree in History and some business grad work. Also a part-time divinity student at present.

I knew enough stats to get a job in marketing research at the Uni after graduating. Everyone on my team was a 30-something female. All of the water cooler chit-chat was about breast pumps and kindergarten and play dates for children.

Sitting next to that team were the Unix guys. They were all 20something men. Their water cooler chat was about science fiction movies, firearms, and tinkering.

I started learning Unix and have never looked back.
