Contabo Introduces New Region (UK)

Got this email in my inbox earlier today.

Hello from England!

By introducing the new UK Region, we’re making a next step in our journey to provide German quality and low prices around the globe. With latency as low as 3 ms for London (and below 15 ms for every major city in the UK and Ireland) it's a perfect solution for everyone who wants to reach UK market. Learn more about our new UK Region and the launch promotion here.

Information about migrating your existing products to the UK can be found here.

This is not our last word in terms of new locations this year, so stay tuned for more.

    Here's the blog post: https://contabo.com/blog/hello-from-england/

The datacenter is located in Portsmouth, United Kingdom.
Also so you don't have to read the blog post: The other additional detail is that you can now pay with GBP.

It seems like the website only shows prices in euros (at least until the point you have to register), so it's probably just that their payment processor converts from euros to pounds at some random rate.

The new nodes in Contabo remain to be seen.
The Seattle node just experienced a network outage, while other nodes experienced prolonged outages in March. Stability is not satisfactory.

Interesting. I've never used them before but the 32TB of traffic seemed like a good option for later on when I (hopefully) might need more bandwidth.

Terrible sorry, no idea what happened there!

  • Any indication that their object storage product will be able to use that DC as one of the location options now or in the near future?

The “New Region in the United Kingdom. Check out our launch promotion” header is on that storage pages as elsewhere, but the FAQ states “Object Storage is available in the European Union, USA and Singapore”.

I suppose I should drop them a message to ask, but as I'm here and someone here might know I've gone for the slightly more lazy option…

You should be able to change the currency from the top right, I can see the prices in pounds just fine. They accept payments directly in pounds.

Actually, it should be unmetered. Their policy is that up until whatever the cap is (In this example 32TB), you can use the full advertised speed. After you hit your cap, you will be limited to 100mbps in the case of the 32TB cap, and higher caps will be limited to higher speeds after hitting those.

This^ it's only Gbit on the VPS XL line.

I can’t help but feel that, despite the budget-friendly nature of the services we celebrate within this fine community that for some reason anything less than the full use of a 1Gbps connection is viewed as an unforgivable cardinal sin!

Oh interesting. I just tried it on a PC and can see it. Briefly thought it was maybe because I was on a Mac, but no... it's just that my window was "only" 80% of the screen width and their tab-bar and price etc bar degrades to a pop-up menu in that case, which doesn't include the price option.

Amazing region deployment speed! For a really "budget", and "cheap" CSP, Contabo is a really nice choice (except VPS).
Let's try to guess the next region which will be launched?
    Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, Zurich?

Also, WTF? The prices in GBP look like they're dividing by the exchange rate instead of multiplying!

The 5.99 EUR server (worth 5.07 GBP) is priced at 6.99 GBP. And that's before you add the surcharge to get the server in the UK, which instead of 1 EUR (worth 0.85 GBP) is charged at 1 GBP.

A 40% markup for a currency conversion seems a little steep.

EDIT: Just checked and a EUR 7.49 (about 7.92 USD) gets turned into 9.99 USD too, so I guess they're happy screwing over any customer who doesn't want to use EUR.

Sir, I am attempting to let go of my anger in this respect. There is no value in ‘hatin on trash’, as someone on Twitter explained to me this past eve.

You see this quite a lot across many products and services that let you buy in multi currency they simply change the currency symbol and keep the price pretty much the same.

More than likely due to they cannot be bothered to run currency updates throughout the day every day.
