Windows Server 2022 Backup

alettonealettone Member

Hi,
I have a VPS with Windows Server 2022 with HostHatch, I'd like to perform regular backups (the snapshots aren't available) to a different online location.
I'd prefer to get something which is quickly recoverable should I have any problem.
I was thinking like a bootable ISO of the bare metal in order to mount it and restore everything but I don't know whether it's possible or not.
I'd like to have the possibility to download the ISO locally and extract the files but this isn't a must have.
As destination I could use OneDrive/GDrive or I can consider to buy a cheap storage VPS, the backup would not be so big (<100GB).
How do you guys perform backups of your VPS?
Thanks

Alessandro

  • Hi,
I've tried several solutions but all of them are a compromise (like backing up the files with Duplicati instead of a system image).
I also have a B2 account and I've tried to configure the Windows Server Backup to upload the backup to a shared folder mounted with rclone.
Unfortunately Windows backup don't backup to non-NTFS filesystem so it doesn't work.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks!

I searched a little bit around and I found out that I could use a small Storage VM for the backup.
I have a 200GB HDD on the VPS (but most of it is empty) so I would need a 500GB max to maintain 4-5 copies of the backups.
I'd like to use the Windows Server Backup in order to be able to restore very quickly both Windows and the data.
It needs an NTFS file system.

I understand that it's possible to mount a folder on my VPS connected to a remote Storage VM.
Is there any guide or can you suggest how to share it securely?
Any advice regarding a provider who can host it on a decent system?
The budget is 3$ a month, I'd stick with HostHatch but their plan is 1TB @ $5, I don't need so much space (actually neither to save $2 but since we are in a lowend forum I'd like to find a good compromise).

    Thank you

    EDIT: I just found this
    https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/bx11
it seems easier to manage than a VM

    +1

Our parent brand has used Acronis for a while now and in my opinion, it's much better and easier to use than Veeam and other backup products that we've used in the past. It also turned out to be a whole heap cheaper and if you're using cPanel, the cPanel plugin is very useful.
