Yandex might face state takeover

https://www.reuters.com/markets/asia/yandex-bond-woes-are-first-step-state-takeover-2022-03-07/
https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/russias-yandex-lacks-funds-cover-potential-bond-redemption-2022-03-04/

Politics aside, it's time to find alternatives to Yandex services before
they deadpool, or worse, get into shady practices by the Russian government.

It sounded like the new shady casts shade on the shade of the old shady.

I expect them to stay online as I have predicted before this news.

I wonder how many people went from GSuite, to Yandex, and are now looking for their next home

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

I'd say anyone who went from Google to Yandex is borderline insane because Yandex has a history of selling info to bidders.

Whenever they got caught, they quickly apologized which people accepted as good enough and sold info again.
To be fair to Yandex, they didn't exactly sell info. But their employees did, repeatedly.

Yeah, like google, fakebook etc don't... We are the product, even as some sellers are worse than others.

Well, I will be moving to https://emailprofi.cz . I suppose I could learn a little bit of Czech. Anyone using it and knows if it has catch-all function?

I'm not going to leave Yandex Mail just yet.

But I hope that they will be able to pull through without Putin's "help".

    But it's delicate, no doubt.

The group, which was worth $22 billion at the end of 2021, isn’t itself sanctioned and isn’t considered close to President Vladimir Putin. Given the near impossibility of remaining politically neutral in Russia, it has had to walk a tightrope in deciding how much data it shares with the authorities. That means it’s unlikely to feature prominently on the West’s sanctions hit list.

    (From https://www.reuters.com/markets/asia/yandex-bond-woes-are-first-step-state-takeover-2022-03-07/ )

  • Why peoples cares to much about Yandex? Seems they only one who victim sanctions at this time. They being taken over.

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

They carter to low end market segment.

And was seen an alternative to Google since Google spies on stuff.

    I was, like, "Yeah...., right."

  • Damn, that might affect the payouts from ai.marketing.

They don't have to physically shut down in order to be considered hostile.
First, the new laws of Russia regarding internet freedom is worse than any
country like a new "fake news" law where you can get up-to 15 years in jail for
    "anti-government speech" whatever it means.

Soon they will have shortage of peering and hardware, but that's not a solid
reason by itself to leave them, I'm just telling that nothing good is going to
happen to them in the foreseeable future.

Police are arresting people on the streets and checking their mobile phone
    chat history. North Korea 2.0

Since they are located under Russian jurisdiction, you can consider any
privacy gone, because they literally don't need any reason now to snoop
on any traffic/account. This is especially true for email which is by default
not encrypted unless you use GPG.

I'm afraid that you may be right. :/

I use my Yandex Mail account as a general email account, so I could move, but it would be a nuisance to move. I don't use this account for anything terribly private, so I'm not so worried about what the Russian authorities could learn from it (e.g., that I recently renewed a VPS at Inception Hosting!).

They might use it to take control of that VM, though. Also, get your payment details, you should not forget Russia is essentially a mafia state, everything is for sale.

All they are gonna find on his account is pie consumption details.

No biggie to be utterly honest.

    ^^This.

Also, before I put my tinfoil hat on, we could see occurrences where emails
of journalists or other high value targets being used for social engineering.
I'm not talking about @yandex.ru/com accounts, but for custom domains that
usually you set up once and forget about it for years since it's "free".

    Point taken.

I think that I should begin to take steps to migrate away from Yandex.

I do like pies (e.g., pumpkin pie, pecan pie), but I don't mind if the Russian authorities learn about this.

  • Moved all my business emails off Yandex the other day. Their service was always good so it was sad to leave.
