Ask on a Vanilla forum? Discourse for sure.
Discourse means an unnecessary 3rd-party imo.
Discourse can be self hosted.
Flarum is nice too.
Neither, one is chunky, one is hard to maintain, How about flarum?

I can't edit poll now.
But, the question is now changed to: Vanilla Forums vs. Discourse vs Flarum
It's 21st century lets choose a modern one.
Used Discourse in the past and it works fine.
Never used Flarum or Vanilla...
I choose NodeBB. It's super faster than Vanilla or Discourse.
I run Discourse. No heavy traffic but it just works perfectly.
It was a bit difficult to understand how it works at the beginning (docker, yaml and stuff), but it's running fine now.
Also it takes A LOT of time to install/update.
