Slow RAID 10 performances Dell PowerEdge R430

Hi guys,

I need your opinion on following config

(PowerEdge R430 3.5" Bay)

  • Intel Xeon E5-2640 v3
  • 128GB Memory
  • Dell PERC H730P Mini RAID Controller
  • 4x 512Gb SSD
  • RAID 10

about disk speed. It is virtual drive RAID 10 that consist of 4 Samsung 840 PRO SSD drives.

I tested it on CentOS 7 and Ubuntu 20.4 empty server not in production yet.

Please see disk speed test and let me know if this is normal speed. To me it looks very slow.

Please guys give me your opinion. And let me know what could be wrong. I have iDrac access and have installed OS via KVM over IP with media.

Not much help from provider so far, currently ticketing with them for disks replacement.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi lonea,

    thank you for your comment. Raid card firmware is
    Firmware Version 25.5.6.0009
    so it should be up to date according this https://docs.delltechnologies.com/bundle/READY_NODE_AMS_DG/page/GUID-EF6C1E0B-61E0-4227-9B74-BBCE699F770F.html

    Just found that Samsung disks are like 40k hours in use not sure that they were in production all the time but they are fairly aged after all. I paid regular price not expecting old drives.

    It might be the reason, will ask for disk replacement in the morning.

    Hi thanks for your help, quite frankly not sure where to find TWB but here are SMARTs for all 4 drives in RAID, hope there are enough info

    You grab the values of Total_LBAs_Written and use: https://www.virten.net/2016/12/ssd-total-bytes-written-calculator/

    20000087152 = ~9TB
    8941668335 = ~4TB

    That's actually not bad at all for 10 year old drives, but yeah, I'd expect to have drives much newer than that in any case.

    Ask for replacements before you troubleshoot further with changing cache settings :smile:

  • Thanks for valuable info Ben, I'm going to ask for replacement with newer disks in the morning my bad didn't spotted that they put quite older disks I was focused more on combined storage because I need 1TB SSD in RAID10 and CPU of course.
