Is OVH a good VPS provider for UK?

Hello,

OVH seem to have the winter sale on right now.

4 vCore
8 GB
160 GB SSD NVMe
1 Gbps unmetered*

seems quite interesting. I couldn't find anything else as fast in the UK. I know OVH's IP reputation might not be the best. Other than that is there any other issues that I should be aware of?

Also does anyone remember the pre-winter sale discount on 12months (-21%) and 24months (-35%) packages?

I'm not sure if -21% and -35% are winter sale deals or was it like this all way along?

Many Thanks,

if you want to pay for a long time then go ahead
you can also consider IONOS or @Mr_Tom or @InceptionHosting

  • Thanks, I cancelled IONOS today. Their IPv6 subnet doesn't route to the VPS. And if I wanted to use IPv6 in NAT mode instead, then OVH is a better deal.

I just checked InceptionHosting, but the bandwidth is too low.

Couldn't find Mr_Tom. Do you have the website?

    it's https://www.vmspecialist.com/ for @Mr_Tom
If you need lots and lots of bandwidth then OVH is a good choice

    Thanks @bruh21

@houmie we've had similar specs on offer in the past, but the unmetered bandwidth might be difficult - is it hard requirement?

    Thanks both.

@Tom I can see you are offering /64 subnet. But is the subnet truly routed to the VPS or is it on-link? f you route an IPv6 prefix then it's usually separate from any onlink prefix used on IPv6 addresses assigned to the external interface.

Providers like IONOS promise that, but fail to deliver. Hetzner, Contabo and Ungleich do it the right way. Edis only provides /112, which is also on-link and doesn't route.

It's a challenge finding providers that truly understand how IPv6 should be configured. So I'm going right now through a lot of pain.

Don't get me wrong OVH doesn't provide any IPv6 subnet at all, but the raw power could be used behind a /64 tunnel.

@houmie each VPS gets an a single IPv6 address automatically and then the /64 is routed to it. So you have full use of the /64 (ie, part of the /64 isn't used as the gateway).

Depends what your doing with the VPS. I had low scores with their VPS’s and moved one to @InceptionHosting

  • @Mr_Tom Thanks for the information. I'm happy to give it a shot. I just tried to purchase one in Amsterdam, but the dropdown doesn't list it. Although it's mentioned on the website. Have you run out?

    Thanks

Sorry, no stock in AMS currently. Low stock in Frankfurt too unfortunately.

I've updated the site so this is clearer that it's out of stock.

Agree with @JamesF; their NVMe SSD VPS range uses older CPU/processors, so PHP performance is average. Everything else is good unlimited bandwidth, NVMe speed is decent, up to 2Gbps network speed, an easy-to-use control panel etc. It's about time they upgrade their CPU/processors. I asked them many times about it, and they said they were looking into it.

I found UpCloud/Vultr has the fastest PHP performance. But other good ones advertise on LET too.
