Oneprovider/Onecloud review - Nigeria instances at 3$

Hello!

I'm sharing with LET something impressive I discovered recently. I was looking for a cloud provider to expand my VPN project and discovered Onecloud, it turns out that they have some exotic locations such Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Mexico, however the biggest surprise was Lagos, Nigeria, especially considering the pricing of the plans (starting at 3$).

Does anyone know how this is even possible? International results are great and AFAIK bandwidth there is highly costly, despite the MTR route show lagos I'm suspecting the IPs are geolocated to some other location. It's simply too good to be true at only 3$

OneCloud is a complete mess when it comes to understand how they're building it.
In some locations, like Lisbon, they're basically reselling VM, using the reseller AS and IPs. Here, they are using their own ASN, and IPs from AFRINIC.

Here are MTR results from different test servers in Lagos:
    https://prnt.sc/24yozu7
    https://prnt.sc/24yp2me
    https://prnt.sc/24yp3os

The IP range seems to be managed by Cloud Innovation (https://cloudinnovation.org), which is offering some IPs services, especially in Africa.

  • so this is really Nigeria?

I have not tested Lisbon region but most of their IPs show their info, probably they just rented Afrinic IPs to a third party but in the afrinic whois still shows oneprovider.com and brainstorm network.

I don't think they are reselling VMs as the plans are the same on all regions. It's true that in some locations where I'm running instances they use the DC IPs and ASN, ex: OVH in Frankfurt region.

Sure it is. Or do you think they conspired with the upstream provider to fake rDNS for you? xe-0-0-0-0.lgscr1.lagos.opentransit.net

    Ping is also looking realistic.

This is disputed IP space, obtained via fraud/corruption. They may lose it.

  • For Lisbon they resell PTisp that is an awesome but expensive provider, and are super oversold on OneProvider.

Lisbon the best price/quality is sold by @Blazingfast_IO that resells Dotsi. They don't post often, but are on LET pretty much everyday.

What do you mean by reselling? Oneprovider is operating their own infrastructure and hypervisors for Onecloud, they are not reselling from any provider.

Obviously they are using in some cases the datacenter's ASN and IPs, this is completely understable talking about a cloud provider offering exactly the same plans, prices and specs in more than 40 locations, I don't think there are many other providers offering such diversity out there, especially at that pricing.

In other cases like this one they are even using their own IPs and ASN, surely this isn't feasible in all their regions, especially on such exotic ones. Based on past testing, they operate their own IP space in RIPE/APNIC regions and also use their own network in several regions, clearly not all.

The subnet is part of 156.224.0.0/11, assigned to Cloud Innovation.

Larus is very closely related to Cloud Innovation, you can do some research, lots of public info on the matter.

Nice deals for that price for this location.

  • Hmmm ... :/

    What is Geo-localization?
A: Geo-localization is a technology used to assign IP's to a server different than where the server physically is. Some of the specs you see on our dedicated server pages have this mention, indicating that the physical location of the server may differ from the one you are viewing. This allows us to offer more affordable options in areas where the prices would normally be considerably higher.

Any support issues is passed along to the provider they renting servers from.

Did they literally just add this as a location? I don't remember seeing it when this post was first created, but I may have just overlooked it.

  • I received multiple emails from the prince of Nigeria wanting to offer me 2 million dollars. But it never occurred to me he was also investing in hosting. Maybe I should reply to all those emails asking for collocation offers.
