Or you know, don't connect to wifi or Ethernet and stop drinking Kool aid.

On a side note, if the world knew how much porn we actually watch, would porn content go up or down?

Itโ€™s going to cost a fortune shipping all this guff to China

Yeah, however I think maybe Chinese customers might want to exchange the reward into recknerd credits so if they won the TV they can exchange it into a good vps with little concern needed on renewal.

  • participated. wow.

A big no to using Smart TVs as Smart TVs yes, as they're all just a Neilson box now, but yeah, as was mentioned you don't have to hook it up to the internet, you can even open it up and remove the wireless hardware, yank the antennas, whatever floats your boat. They can all be reused.

The panel quality is really all that matters.

As you have 10tbit connection, you don't need a tv, you need neuralink. To directly stream in your mind.

    Jk! And great going, racknerd!

What exactly is the issue if they were neilson boxes? You do know this is a major factor in deciding whether a show gets renewed or cancelled? Always makes me wonder why the fuck they think their viewing habits are privileged.

Now, if you said something about deprecating features or showing ads, then you have a valid complaint.

I probably should have worded my comment better. Depreciating features, ads, and security holes are something I had totally spaced when I wrote that comment, but you're right, they are a much more valid complaint.

I'm not running up in customer houses yelling to get rid of their smart TV, and I'm not advocating against them, just acknowledging that I can see the dislike for them. Why should Netflix automatically get my viewing data when I don't even subscribe?

If cable was as originally promised, a thing you pay for to avoid the advertising on public television, I'd probably use it, but they decided to double dip. Some public channels are actually better than these "premium services", PBS has some great content for example.

Streaming services, instead of the nonstop commercials, just make money off of user data. If this was opt-in, I might agree to it, I'm down with proper use of metrics to better ones services, but it never is and making it near impossible to opt-out is really not my idea of how one should treat customers.

I get the concept of a Neilson box, I do, I just don't like the execution in this case.

Personally I'll stick with a high quality panel, at a good price, and play my own media collection on it. Whatever proprietary SoC with less power than an RPi Zero W they rigged up inside of it doesn't matter to me unless it hinders the panel, and in that case LCD controllers are cheap and quite easy to swap.

I doubt this is true, but even if it was the answer would be that the cost/price you paid for that TV was subsidized by the Netflix investment in the product. At the same time, it's not like they're exploiting you from obtaining revenue from watching TV you otherwise could get - you can't. In college, I tried a service that paid us to stream music and they went bankrupt for obvious reasons.

Privacy concerns aside, those Netflix subsidies are part of why I'm a bit salty about the whole thing, there was a time I could make a nice profit repairing TVs and flipping them, but who wants to buy/repair a used TV when you can buy a 65" 4K for a few hundred? lol

    https://news.northeastern.edu/2019/09/20/northeastern-university-research-finds-smart-tvs-other-internet-connected-devices-are-exposing-private-user-data/

Not the best article as it kinda states a lot of the obvious, and I'm aware that smart devices really do mean a trade off of some privacy, a choice we have to make with every purchase. I do wish consumers were informed a little better about some of these things, but the TL;DR of the research I was referring to would be:

"Choffnes and his team conducted more than 34,000 experiments in which they tested 81 devices in the U.S. and U.K. [...] They found that many TV devices were collecting data and sending it to Netflix, even when users were not Netflix customers."

Now, I can't seem to find the actual research paper on the study and if this is actually incorrect I wouldn't mind being told so, I just don't feel like diving down this rabbit hole myself right now. Maybe after a stiff drink. :D
