That all depends on how much risk you're wanting to absorb. If you want the risk that your hardware is going to get taken with no legal protection, then I'm sure you'll find someone who won't make you sign a contract...
But, always get a contract and do the paperwork. It's worth it in the end.

Contracts are typically there to protect both parties, however most places will require something signed as you are putting in equipment.
