Is +90% wait state acceptable?

msattmsatt Host Rep, Veteran

Doing a tar on a storage server (HostHatch) and getting more than 90% wait showing in top.
CPU usage is no greater than 2%

Appreciate this is storage so wondered if this is acceptable / unusual ?

  • Barely anything works with that cpu wait so no

  • How much data and how long did it take? I feel like you're asking the wrong question or something.

That doesn't sound right. Maybe make sure with the provider to see what's going on.

  • Old mate boomhauer reckons its a slow Ubuntu mirror that causes IO wait...

im guessing we are on the same node and that its the IOWait. if so, wait 3 days more.

    IO issue
    maybe failing drive

  • I would contact your host, 90% wait time is absurd. Chances are the machine's storage is either failing or you're on an extremely over allocated node.

Just re-tried (early morning - so assuming lighter load).
    time tar -cvf /root/synced.tar .
    ......
    real 8m5.614s
    user 0m2.797s
    sys 0m22.872s

    folder is 6.3GB
wa (in top) averaging around +85% cpu average around 5%

Previous test took over 15 minutes to complete same tar.

Happy to raise a ticket but don't want to if these sorts of timings are 'acceptable / random'.

  • 15min for 6gb in budget storage vps, it's acceptable for me.

acceptable or not for shared resources is very relative, for benchmark lover 1% slower than other provider is critical :#
