When buying new hosting do I have to use a domain name for cpanel/logging in?

A lot of my domains are transient and the domain it asks for will often have long expired and be something I no longer work with. Why do you have to use domain names to deal with hosting?

I mean why can you just login with username and password like everything else on the net? I mean it can't be because the account has to be tied to the domain because as I said above those domains long expire and I still keep using the login details to login to the hosting.

So is there a way to have something generic for logging in?

So like I would sign up to hosting with 'fluffypinkelephants.com' because I was working with that niche at the time of buying the domain but that work long finishes and domain expired yet I still have to sign into the hosting with 'fluffypinkelephants.com' and also all addon domains have that as root for the whole time I use that hosting. How to have something neutral and generic?

  • Depend on billing & provisioning system, WHMCS and Blesta use it. If your provider use another billing system then maybe they will not ask for a domain name

  • You don't have to use a valid name usually, though if cPanel is going to hang off that domain it is worth using a real one for HTTPS purposes.

You could register a neutral domain and use that, or sub-domains off that if you prefer (sub-domains are a good idea if as above you end up logging into cPanel using that name rather than a name used by the host), and keep that name around for ever. I use nogoodnamesareleft.com for that purpose, and for the name server addresses for my other domains (though not for cPanel/similar, all my hosted resources are self-managed bare boxes or VMS these days).

If you don't you end up with this:
    "youporn-dontuserealdomainsyoudontown.com"

  • You could always use the IP address to login.
