@Proxecure the OP asked for servers, not clients.
I like to roll my own using asyncssh or paramiko.
dropbear
OpenSSH
Used to use this back when squeezing every MB of RAM as more meaningful...today I think my smallest VPS is 1GB so it's less critical.
It does appear in this seminal article: https://lowendbox.com/blog/yes-you-can-run-18-static-sites-on-a-64mb-link-1-vps/
Openssh all the way. Dropbear when ram is tiny but this is 2021.
exactly. providers should stop offering 256mb ram vps. ram is getting cheaper, 1GB or f-off.
Not sure I'd want to use something still in beta for my front door on a production VPS/Server, but might give it a try on a 128MB development NAT box.
Otherwise OpenSSH if we were having a poll.
OpenSSH until someone creates a SSH server plugin for WordPress in PHP.
Good one!
Telnet is the best! I never quite understood all the hype around SSH.
Same. Haven't used Dropbear in years!
@Privacy why do you prefer TinySSH?
Is Mosh acceptable here?
I think mosh doesn't get included in the SSH software category. I like mosh nonetheless due to my poor internet connection
OpenSSH what do you need else?
It's the lightest SSH server and has sensible defaults. It runs happily with no configuration and uses 3-4MB of RAM.
Some scenarios require use of a more optimized solution. Today, it isn't much of an issue but if you could save a few MB of RAM on a low memory box, wouldn't you?
Wait, there is more than one?
Over the years, yes

The default OpenSSH is ok with me, is any reason to replace the default one?
No, if you like OpenSSH then it's perfectly fine. Personally, I like to use a more lightweight solution as I only need simple SSH and nothing more.
telnet? Yeah that’s gonna be real secure.
Telnet since 1975. Why always try to reinvent the wheel?
Telnet is fine, so is TFTP and Gopher.
PS: TFTP is really the best, port 69.
ZOC8 from EmTec.
My mistake, I was saying Telnet to emphasize that I don't need features such as X11 forwarding or SFTP that OpenSSH offers. I'd hope no one is using Telnet these days.
