Does anybody know if I can run bitwarden_rs (docker) on on the 512MB VPS?

it can run dockers fine, but I have no idea is 512MB is enough.

it looks like it, but they specify 2 GB is minimum https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/gwy2u1/bitwarden_self_host_ram_requirements/

You can try it with 512MB or get a higher spec VPS https://lowendbox.com/blog/boomer-host-free-stickers-with-every-order-7-95-year-for-a-1gb-vps

    Hi ezeth,
thank you very much for your reply! Bitwarden_rs is a fork of the official Bitwarden software and needs much less specs than the official version (2GB vs 200MB). I compiled bitwarden_rs and deployed it sucessfully to a low spec VPS, but was wondering if I could use one of your VPS with bitwarden_rs + docker. Docker would be very nice to have on top because it would make the management und updating process so much more enjoyable.

Is it possible to get a 24h free trial to check this out?

Thank you very much for this great und truely lowend offer :-D

    Docker will work fine.

Trail and truely lowend offer doesn't go hand in hand :-D

It takes too much time to create a trial for what the profit margin is sorry.

Raided disks on SSDs is kind of useless. They usually die around the same time. Backups is what you need.

Snapshots/automated backups to 2nd server is coming early 2022

Even though bitwarden communication and data will be encrypted, installing it on a OVZ container doesn't sound 'right' to me.

Depending on your paranoia you should consider regularly checksumming your binaries from another machine to ensure integrity as a compromised host could easily and silently install backdors in the containers.

Oh look. It's your average OpenVZ FUDer. Don't listen to the FUD

Like KVM is any better. The provider can just take a live snapshot, reset root password on a offline machine and access all the files without leaving a trace..

The better question is. Why would anyone care about what someone else hosts?

Of course that's possible with KVM as well but for instance placing a backdoor / man in the middle onto the VM for example to sniffer SSH or TLS traffic is simply much more work with KVM than with OVZ. If that's you aim, you will first do it on a compromised OVZ host.

You don't know why (talking about bitwarden here) someone should be interested in someone else's password store with hundreds of passwords including mailboxes etc. incl. full access to filesystem and shell?

Valid point which made me think twice. I can't deny the fact that hosting sensitive data (bitwarden_rs) is more suited for an environment where you have control over the kernel and the physical access of the machine.

Thinking about alternatives maybe it is the right time to get me a Raspi. I also run Pihole on a KVM and it took me some time to harden the system to avoid being used as open resolver in DNS amplification attacks.

A Raspi would save me time, money (long run) and give me peace of mind.

    @ezeth
Nevertheless, thank you very much for the great offer and your time. Even if it does not suit my needs after thinking twice, it is a very attractive offer and I think a lot of members will love your El Cheapo VPS ;-)

I hope you can grow your business. Stay healthy and happy 👍

This. I cannot stress this enough. If it's anything valuable you need to have full control. A simple VPS, KVM or OVZ is not safe. It doesn't matter how much you harden it. You need to ditch all cloud services

You wouldn't know if the provider just restored a backup, entered rescue and checked all your files on a different machine! There is no trace of it

Uh oh. Provider would rather have you lose all your data and restore every time an SSD disk dies instead of just replacing bad disks and keeping everything up. If you need high uptime or reliable service, I shouldn't have to explicitly tell you this isn't the provider for you.

That we're better than most LET Hosts?

    Sure

We own and colocate our own hardware
We own our own IP space, no lease
