    Good luck with your budget

    Congrats on your first post

  • Definitely chia mining. Otherwise, what for do you need 32 gigs of RAM?

as a sign of good faith I am ok with 16Gb too

    $150-$200 /mo

what sort of cpu and bandwith are you looking for?

  • @SGraf said:

    cpu: E3-1230
    bw: 1gbps - 100TB/mo

the whole bandwidth in a full year wont exceed 300TB.

    The end is nigh.

What a coincidence that in the span of just a weekend a few people need massive amounts of 'backup space' with lots of RAM and a fast cpu.

And what a coincidence that this is never for chia farming.

I have an offsite backup box with 32gb ram. Running a pfsense vm and a vm for Veeam along with an ssh endpoint so 32gb is reasonable for backups

It does make sense though. People who legitimately need a lot of storage are suddenly shopping around for it because they're having more trouble finding it than they were before chia took over.

I'm just lucky I put in my orders before or I'd be in the same boat.

    Totally makes sense

Anyone who legitimately makes use of ZFS will easily benefit from more memory or CPU

Resilient storage is trending towards software solutions, this means higher memory/CPU usage for ensuring data consistency/compression. Those features aren't free in terms of resource usage

I have zero interest in mining and I've been waiting for at least a week for the big Hetzner SX box. I want something that beefy because I have a LOT of data to dedupe

I barely fill up my cold storage of 8TB sitting in my basement on LAN.

Why do you need that much space?

I easily fill up 24TB on my Synologies.

How do you survive with such little storage?

  • deankdeank Member, Troll

After giving it a thought, it's probably because I don't watch TV and don't really care for any films.

    1 minute of push-ups = 15MB
    8TB = 388 days of nonstop push-ups
    Who's doing it with me?

    Guessing you also don't

    • shoot/edit video
    • work with 3D models
    • work with art
    • create music
    • analyze chess endgames

    etc.

I work with 3D models as a hobby. Been using Blender for many years now.
    I also do some arts.

Data retention on HDD is only about 3 ~ 5 years. No point in having giant data.

I keep filling up 10TB hetzner storage boxes personally. Got tired of it and went back to their SX line. My backup strategy needs a downgrade.

Youtube feeds me most of my entertainment or side-entertainment because I don't actually watch a lot of stuff. I just want some sound in background.

Since 2015, Critical Role has filled that role rather nicely.

Check out Me, Myself, and Die. S1 was fantastic...I'm a bit behind on S2.
