In Soviet Russia Test IPs ping YOU: http://www.vpsnine.com/hosting/locations.php

A simple but awesome idea, I wish more multi-location providers implemented that.

On a related note, VPSnine have offers from $5/mo in all those locations https://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1324603

    This doesn't work well because a lot of routers drop/reject ICMP by default:

    Same here, blocked by firewall

    Not many ISPs drop ICMP (at least in the US), but your CPE certainly might. Totally blocking ICMP breaks PMTUD.

    @Microlinux

    Yes. The ISP doesn't actually drop ICMP, it's just default firewall settings on the router. Can be enabled easily.

  • How is this possible?

  • Your ISPs peering exchange/transit provider to this location (or one after it somewhere in the chain) drops (some) ICMP packets.

    Is there any particular reason why would they do that?

    I think it just timed out because their Singapore location is down, or at least down on specific routes. I'm unable to access testfiles.sg2.vpsnine.com at all (HTTP/ping).
