Review of Genesis Hosting

I guess this company is not popular here? I don't remember seeing any discussion about them.

I learned of this company via a benchmark website and decided to give it a go. Signed up for the cheapest plan:

$3 / 1 CPU / 1GB RAM / 50GB SSD storage (max output 50 MiB per second) / Network (did not mention TB limitation, only speed is capped 250 Mpbs)

This VPS is only for hosting a small private game server for a small community of friends so I would say it has not done much weightlifting. But still, when the party is on, everyone plays very smooth and the server never has a downtime so far. Despite the less-than-appealing connection speed, players from all over the world seem to have a rather decent ping and most of them do speak highly of the performance.

Below is the small run of nench:

capture

Aside from the product performance, the after-sale has been good. The product is solid and therefore so far I only needed to approach them once - it is - my stupid mistake. I suddenly forgot my password and also the security question so I was totally locked up from the portal for config. I was doing some urgent config and couldn't wait. Therefore, I had to reach them by phone and the call was swiftly answered, without unnecessary wait. The gentleman on the other hand was very friendly and helpful, resolving the problem very quickly.

Not my favorite Ryzen but Xeon 6154 is already good enough. Now they only offer Chicago and hopefully one day they can expand to other locations.

Verdict: Not much PR work I guess? But definitely a solid provider. Everything was smooth from the beginning - you got your login immediately after paying. Never had any problems except for my stupidity - how could I forgot both the password and security question?

You get 5TB bw, any more is billed per gb

Oh really? I was not aware. It was not mentioned on the spec or invoice. But honestly, it really does not matter to me... my usage on little vps is always below 1 TB....

Cheers mate. Thank you for letting me know.

It's on the VM page, it's 5TB for all. They are a good provider, mostly handle local businesses I think.

Been using them for 6 months now, solid provider and great support. Also has redundant/NAS storage to help mitigate the risk of data loss.

Rather unusual CPU, the gold one. Noice.

Thank you for letting me know. I have never read it to be honest. Well... I am just paying $3 per month..... can't ask for more.... ;)

Good to know! It is indeed a pity that the distance between their Data Centre and me is rather huge :/ otherwise I don't mind getting a RDP for light use.... now the Genesis one is mainly for some friends in America to have fun...

Absolutely. I was surprised when running the benchmark. It is indeed a killer compared to the price paid.

This is the $5 plan w/ 4GB ram. IO Throughput is mediocre, but it's redundant/NAS. So I use this server where reliability is important.

CPU and network are very good..

Yea, they're solid provider, great price, reliable, and been around for quite some time now. Unfortunate they dont have much exposure, maybe they're not trying to.

  • Thanks @Loganspace for the benchmark run of our platform! Just to clarify, this is our $5/month flavor (vm.t5sd.2xlarge).

I'm using genesis for my family social media site and next cloud. So far no complaints and great prices. There is a jump in price should you need another vCPU compared to other low end vps but I'm good with one core for now.

  • Their service is getting worse. Increasingly frequent downtime of the duration of hours. Even their site is unreachable. There is no platform to indicate the status of their servers or nodes, and there is no social channel to inform customers of what is happening..
We are lost with huge damages.

Genesis, isn't that a computer mouse brand?

  • @Ludovic - we have had a few network leaf switch problems that caused outages after upgrading our spine switches. When requested via a ticket, we have provided a post mortem document that describes the issue and the resolution which should avoid the original switch issue (a software problem in two pairs of Mellanox switches).

During one of the maintenance procedures tonight (to get us closer to the resolution), we had an issue that caused a network outage. We are working on a status system, but it has not been deployed in production yet. It is coming soon. Please submit a ticket if you have remaining issues that you need help with.
