The X2Go server only runs on Linux. So maybe you're mistaking it for something else. And given that, I doubt the client support would be somehow worse on Linux specifically.

Ah, okay. I really haven't looked at it closely. Perhaps I should.

For a modern solution better check out X2Go: https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:newtox2go

x2go isn't very modern. It's using an old X11 from 2005, lacking newer features that GNOME3, KDE5, and other GUI programs require these days.
    See: https://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:de-compat

I still prefer x2go wherever it works, if only because it uses SSH so you don't need to open ports on your server or manually forward an port over SSH to localhost to get that level of security. And it has a few nice options, like connecting to local sessions.

XRDP works with modern X11 software more often than x2go, and performs well (better than VNC). Plus it has the added advantage of almost everyone already having the viewer installed.

Another good option is Xspice. How-to: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-qxl/tree/README.xspice

  • What I like to do with (some of) my VPS setups is to setup XRDP (accessible only via localhost) and a simple fluxbox setup (with Firefox/Chrome/whatever) so that I can run an RDP session via an SSH tunnel. Works pretty well - as secure as it gets via SSH. Performance depends on CPU and latency but on the whole it performs well enough to use as a regular remote browser.

I seem to prefer XRDP over x2go as it is much easier to setup needs minimal packages and allows me to have a full SSH wrapper protection without any fuss.

I thought Xrdp can't be much better than VNC since it already uses VNC under the hood locally, and then converting that to RDP for network. But it looks like it can also use xorgxrdp which should be more efficient.

  • Enjoying Chrome remote desktop: https://remotedesktop.google.com/headless/ Dont think it gets easier than this.
