China Telecom now using trans-Russian low latency route to Europe

I was researching some connectivity problems earlier and found out my server on CT in China had low latency from Europe (Telia Carrier) and did a trace-route from Dusseldorf AND it was ~200 ms. I researched further and found China Telecom's looking glass & network performance site.

~171ms from Frankfurt to Shanghai. Its literally impossible via trans-US or trans-Singapore so the only route is trans-Russian.

Real time network performance matrix (for some reason it doesn't show the Mainland China data, only overseas but the looking glass has real time mainland China data:

Upon further research RETN and China Telecom now have a trans-Kazakhstan route now to China:

The absolute shortest terrestrial route between Frankfurt & Hong Kong is ONLY 150ms 100G waves.

Comments

  • Are you saying China and Russian sharing customers data?

  • Probably not unless needed by the government. You know that both China & Russia are authoritarian are those are the rules if you want to be in their market. I did some further tests with my server and China Telecom has transit to China from London, Amsterdam & Frankfurt <200ms to China.

  • Is this really a new thing?
I had sub 170ms latencies to Beijing using Telefonica O2 ADSL in Germany at least since early last year, didn't check earlier.
And right now I'm getting 171ms on Speedtest to Beijing China Unicom using o2-de 4G in roaming in the Netherlands (~30-35ms to Frankfurt), while CT is around 200ms.

  • The absolute shortest terrestrial route between Frankfurt & Hong Kong is ONLY 150ms 100G waves.

    Decrypt that gobbledygook for me.

  • beware your customers data
