here's some geekbench for the KVM-S

already decent before enabling CPU passthrough: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/14625492

and really "ludicrous" performance after passthrough was enabled: https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/14625544

I kept an eye on CPU steal time while running the multicore benchmarks - usually under 1%. rarely spiking up to (once) 3%. No complaints about that - when idling it's usually 0%, rarely above 0.2%

Note I'm running with full-disk encryption (LVM on LUKS) so the AES flag was a significant boost. (Also keep in mind if comparing disk numbers to some other setup without encryption)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    CPU model : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 v2 @ 3.00GHz

Total size of Disk : 84.2 GB (1.2 GB Used)

    OS : Debian GNU/Linux 10
    Arch : x86_64 (64 Bit)

    Average I/O speed : 433.3 MB/s

Still need to give the network a proper workout - might need to do some tuning - but ultimately am expecting good things.

Support has been ridiculously fast to answer 3 tickets over the weekend.

First one asking to adjust invoice to reflect the $7 price with promo code that I couldn't figure out where to enter. Second to mount Debian 10 ISO for installation. Third was to request enabling AES flag and/or CPU passthrough. (Thank you "LJ" ... Support is apparently working out of China so might also expect good possibilities for agreeable Chinese-language support as well? That is good to see.)

  • Vps have 1gbit port?

Any back up options available for the vps?

Seems to be the case - for example iperf to Psychz in Chicago yields 828 Mbits/sec

Transfer via scp to a nearby server in Dallas (HostDoc) hits about 33 MB/s

But I've been seeing slower speeds (more like 50 mbits) when doing scp to other places (including Psychz in Chicago) - not sure what's going on with that.

Will need to take a closer look with mtr when I get a chance. (I suspect this was a temporary condition possibly related to DDoS protection due to some abuse happening elsewhere in Incero Dallas network - as per recent news from @HostDoc. Just speculating, don't have much time to dig into the gory details at the moment ... kind of hoping it will have been resolved by the time I get back to it )

    EDIT2:

just pushed 1 GB to Psychz Chicago via scp at 45 MB/s

but am now pulling that same file back to DrServer Dallas at more like 4 MB/s

so there's something up with incoming traffic at the moment (guessing DDoS filtering)

but - tl;dr: yes, VPS is on gigabit port ... :)

@uptime If you wish provide a traceroute to Chicago and I'll see what our networking team can do for this.

Hello - ticket #685892 - has a few mtr reports to and from Chicago.

Let me know if any other info might help. :)

    EDIT2:

Got it sorted now - seems to have been an issue with the network driver (apparently specifying virtio driver did the trick to fix the slow inbound transfer).

Just pulled a few GB from Psychz in Chicago at better than 30 MB/s via scp, https, and http to test. Happy to be able to say "newtork is fast my man" and support has been impressive.

The main thing I was looking to get from this particular $7 deal was a stable system and decent network. Turns out it's got a surplus of superior potassium all around (once teh virtualizor gets with the program)

    Good stuff :)
