Need dedicated server for transcoding videos

derperaderpera Member
edited August 2019 in Requests

I have a lot of videos I need to transcode from mp4/mkv to HLS playlists. Cloud encoding services are kinda expensive and I want to set up my own video transcoder, even if it takes a while.

Does anyone have a recommendation or offer? I need the most performant CPU for video transcoding with a ~$50/mo budget, 100GB disk space. Any other factor is not important. EU preferred, but again, not important.

I will most likely go for a Hetzner auction server, but wondering if there is any better alternative for me out there.

Thanks

  • As you say Hetzner is probably the best choice. You can get two i7/E3-12xx servers for ~50 USD.

  • @derpera this server is best for u for fast encode video. https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/ex51-ssd-gpu/configurator

  • If you just need 1 time and not always, try spot instances at AWS or hourly ones with some providers here.

  • What is your goal? For fast transcoding, or for quality transcoding? Because some of CPU's has integrated GPU which can dramatically boost process, but with the cost of quality.

If you can, a tad more info on what you plan to transcode to? If it’s h264, as desperand points out, there's cheap boxes that have iGPUs (quicksync) that can speed through jobs if you don’t mind the quality hit.

You’ll have to lookup what you’re happy with quality wise as they change generation-to-generation, with newer iGPUs being better and faster.
Some of the newer chips even have accelerated h265 and VP9 encoding.
There’s also GPU encoders, like nvenc and VCE that are better than quicksync, both in speed and quality, especially the 10/20 series nvidia cards. These will most likely be outside your budget however

If you had planned to run everything through h264 on preset ultra/superfast I'd just use an iGPU. Otherwise software will still be your best bet quality wise, especially at lower bitrates, assuming h264.

Hetzner auction dedi sounds like a safe bet.

    @derpera
For video transcoding you have to use a CPU with graphics processor: E3-1245v5, E3-1275v5, E3-1245v6 or E3-1275v6
We have E3-1275v6 in Frankfurt, you can try to test the CPU from $5/day.

  • I'm indeed transcoding to h264 but even have some 4K content, I tried before but the quality loss was too much with GPUs. As I said, I don't mind if the transcoding takes some time, just looking to get the best CPU for the available budget.

Thanks for all the offers listed, will go through them.
