Looking for KVM 2GB RAM

Looking for a reliable service provider for a 2GB RAM KVM. Disk Size 25-40gb.
Budget: 20-25USD/year
Mostly looking for a server where I can do pre-deployment testing, so custom iso installs and frequent wipes need to be supported.

just curious - how did you arrive at that range for a budget?

@cybertech ... oh right, that might explain it - the "reliable" part of OP's request threw me for a loop ... Btw how has your WelcomeHosting KVM in LA been holding up? If it's still available at $2.08 monthly, then that might be as good a bet as any for OP.

@budgetdev - even for a "test and wipe" dev testing setup I'd be careful about jumping into an annual payment. Here's my risk-adjusted calculation, let's say for an "I can't believe it's not butter!" deal with provider of unknown quality at $24 per year:

$24/y + 50% chance that it sooner or later sucks to the point where you say "oh shit what was I thinking" and end up buying something else this time with (slightly) more reasonable $36/y budget ... might come out to an amortized cost closer to $40 per year, statistically speaking. I mean - you might get lucky, but you'll be rolling the dice. See https://lowenddeadpool.info to get some perspective.

If you want to pay annually, better to hold off another 16 weeks until Black Friday / Cyber Monday and then catch one of the flash sale deals from @VirMach (see last year's thread to get some idea of how that goes). Also expect great deals from other reliable providers which you can take some time to check out a bit more in the meantime. (Many excellent providers are active on LET, and the search function works well enough to support whatever amount of due diligence you care to exercise.)

In the meantime, you might give Hetzner cloud a try. €2.49 per month will get you a KVM with 2 GB ram and 20 GB ssd (extra storage via resizable volume adds €0.04 / GB per month - so another 10 GB would cost €0.40 per month). The nice thing is - it's billed hourly (€0.004 per hour) - so you can take a snapshot and then delete the instance when you're not using it - and just pay for the snapshot storage (which I think is also €0.04 / GB per month) and maybe if you want to keep the same IP that would be another €1 monthly.

tl;dr - if location in Germany works for you, then Hetzner cloud might fit your budget for a "test and wipe" setup.

As far as the custom ISO thing goes - you can often DIY that if necessary by using https://netboot.xyz (just ask for more details if you have any questions about that).

Maybe also check https://www.serverhunter.com/?search=99C-364-8FD to see what else is out there. "Be sure to check reviews" - or ask for opinions here if any doubts.

Obligatory "Good luck with your budget" ...

Thanks for the mention @uptime! :) Since @budgetdev wants to find a reliable provider, I've added the domain age as a column here: https://www.serverhunter.com/?search=2F3-633-FE6.

I would recommend raising the budget to about $35-40 USD/year.

@uptime not bad actually, but the sign up link defaults u to NY node. If OP has time, put in some work to get to LA/Dallas for very cheap price.

best performing location is in LA:

    https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/14154890

    next Dallas:

    https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/13883118

Dallas network is more stable, LA had some intermittent high pings which I believe can be resolved, but due to having more than 10 VPS now I start to weed out even the cheapest value deals.

Their hardware raid is well set up. Performs mostly like SSD until u do some direct writes

For frequent wipes, this is perfect for me.

HostHatch (@Abdullah) and @StockServers had KVM offers somewhat like this in the past, but the disk was something in the lines of 20GB. You should follow @uptime advice and wait for Black Friday or for a sale of some other well known provider.

^ 111 days until black friday.

And do take the opportunity now to try a few monthly (or better still, hourly) - since network can be a fickle beast, and you'll want to be confident that you've shopped around sufficiently to find the best balance between price and performance for your particular needs. Then you'll be in a much better position to pull the trigger on an annual deal without risking too much in the way of buyer's remorse.

EDIT2: and perhaps that much more so in the case where different control panels (facilitating custom ISO) might indeed make a difference for your "test and wipe" workflow.

a "resource pool" offer may (or may not) be useful - these may cost a bit more (though not always - sometimes can be a nice deal when you want more IP addresses)

and sometimes it's well worth it to pay a few dollars more for a better shot at reliable, sustainable service.

other hourly providers you might look at: Lunanode, intoVPS, mivocloud, vultr, DigitalOcean, and Linode. Note that Hetzner, Lunanode, intoVPS, and mivocloud are active to varying degrees here on LET. :)

Out of these hourly providers, I've only been using (and can recommend) Hetzner, Lunanode and vultr recently - a long time ago I reluctantly gave up on Linode due to their repeated episodes of severe lameness handling security breaches. Linode may or may not have improved in that department since then, but at this point I'm sufficiently well served by Hetzner, Lunanode, and vultr for whatever Linode used to do for me and then some, and at a better price, so ....
