maybe it's just new to me (haven't messed with LES much lately)
but in case it helps anyone else installing Debian 9 from template
seems one may then need to login via console and
apt install openssh-server(and then add a user to login with, as root login via ssh will be disabled by default)
Such a wonderful offer, too bad wasn't around this when it was posted!
