wow. Impressive.
Just came out
No IPv6? Whaaaat? 😂
well it's cheap tuition in the school of hard knocks I guess.
I suspect you'll need to wait until Black Friday to pick up a deal from @VirMach if you're looking for a decent 2 GB / 2 vcores in Los Angeles for much less than $5 per month.
Have you considered trying options in Seattle?
EDIT2:
HostHatch, LetBox, CrownCloud, UltraVPS.eu, AlphaVPS.bg also good possibilities for Black Friday deals for Los Angeles KVMs. Also might check vmhaus (hourly billed). And SmartHost is another possibility - not sure how deep their discounts will go since they've been around the block a few times and might actually know what they're doing.
In Seattle check out IonSwitch, SpartanHost, SpeedyKVM, and HyperExpert. (I've tried IonSwitch and SpartanHost, can recommend them both.)
Nice list! Thanks.
Am now looking out for Fremont, SanJose as well. Seattle will check again.
anyway update - welcomehosting seems to be just okay , not total crap. their NY node improved a little but still pretty slow. support replied in timely fashion and shifted to Dallas due to no LA location. Will not contest this for $2 since so far they appear to be helpful.
Dallas one is much smoother, pending tests.
Bandwagonhost (Fremont, also Los Angeles) is popular for good connectivity to China - might be good for SG as well. Not exactly cheap but sometimes offer low-end promo pricing. KVM with custom control panel, nice system but setup for templates rather than ISO installs.
I like @freerangecloud (Fremont) for network, uptime, support, and pricing - have not stressed about benchmarks or performance yet as it's been more than sufficient for my use.
@VirMach offers San Jose - rarely does deep discounts in that location but something to look for around Black Friday / Cyber Monday
also might check: intoVPS, upcloud, aquanx, hostfav, vultr, Linode, Digital Ocean, and atlantic.net for more options in the general vicinity of silicon valley - less likely to see discounted prices with any of these as far as I can tell.
DO's physical Bay Area location is in San Francisco, the only low end provider I know of with gear there. Everyone else's is in the south bay.
I've always wanted to get a vps from one of the grand old names in this industry, prgmr.com, just because. They are in San Jose and their plans and prices are comparable to DO/Vultr but less selection and they are monthly only. They are Xen based which is a little bit unusual now.
I have a Virmach San Jose vps from BF a few years ago and it's reliable if on the slow side. They are often out of stock though, or anyway not in their usual promos. Freerangehosting had a July 4 promo for their Fremont location, now over unfortunately. Basically I just spin up an hourly DO or Vultr instance if I temporarily need something else in the region. I don't use it enough to justify paying full rent on a monthly idler.
So after shifting from NY to Dallas and finally to LA and much tinkering, it's actually pretty ok for the price tag.
