I'm not able to add s3.amazonaws.com/subfolder/ to Google Search Console, Can you?
Hi,
I was hosting a static HTML site on s3.amazonaws.com/subfolder/ and that was added to Google Search Console, verified and working.
Recently I made another static HTML site on s3.amazonaws.com/subfolder2/ but now Google Search Console is not accepting it. The message displayed by them says: "cannot find s3.amazonaws.com site".
Has Google stopped accepting s3.amazonaws.com sub-folders in Google Search Console?
If anybody here on LET is using s3 as static site, just try adding new subfolder to your GSC/GWT account. If it gets verified, just let me know! thanks.

Why not use a custom domain instead?

You need to use together with custom domain and public access as well as Cloudfront. Shouldn't be using S3 directly like that.
Google most likely blacklisted that domain from search / webmaster tools after hacks like this: https://blog.usejournal.com/how-one-affiliate-used-amazon-s3-to-outrank-everyone-on-google-9744c8e7322f
