You can start with Vagrant http://vagrantup.com and experiment anyway you'd like to. Here is a huge list of OS templates http://www.vagrantbox.es/

Why not learn low end KVM while your at it
1 Core
64MB Ram
56GB Bw
1 IPv4
IPv6 on request
in signature
why not make a vm on your current system (pc or notebook) and practice there...
no more pm-ing offer?
Now this is against the rules @ErawanArifNugroho
@bluevm has 5-7USD/year plans. Ask him for one box
@Maximum_VPS Can you do a 128 MB for $12/year?
@WellGrounded not at this time.
REMOVED.
VMWare Player
@Maximum_VPS $15/year?
Come on, just open an offer thread instead of asking in every topic that exists

On topic - I would recommend using a KVM as you can get installation experience, partitioning experience as well as better network virtualization.
You could also use something like VirtualBox on your home computer
@WebSearchingPro I have, not everyone responds to it. And most people who respond to it I already have a box with.
@WellGrounded will continue this in pm.
Previously, when someone needed a vps or dedicated server, there will be someone offering something but asking via pm.
We can do 128MB VPS for $13.5/year
@concerto49 PM me please

We just launched an offer that would be fantastic for a learning VPS, and perhaps if you wanted to take it into a production environment in the future.
You can always send us a ticket too if you need help figuring out something
