in General
I have seen multiple hosts offering free web hosting plans and i am hoping to get some feedback as to whether it is a good idea or not?

Uncertain, depend on which host you use.
Like hostinger limited 1% cpu usage and you will get banned if you were attacked. (not sure, maybe outdated information. just for an example)
The end is nigh.

debian, thx
Free web hosting is never a good idea. The provider will not have time for you when you urgently need it, because of all the abusers of free services (which consume provider's time and resources). Besides, if your website is under some attack (DDoS, brute-force, spam, whatever), you will never know how they'll react, because they have no obligation to explain you anything regarding a free service.
However, free web hosting may be a good idea to test something, such as a small website template or some development, but not for production as it's unreliable.
Simply ask for some offer according to your needs and pay your provider.
@Fastmako, don't give OP a good advice. He is harvesting answers for his own support and knowledge base.
In short, the kid is using LET as his support team.
Here's a great, reliable, updated resource for free web services: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4962495/where-to-find-free-public-web-services
@serversupportz Well it is ok to open threads but you never seen to participate in them? So why is that?
Reliable but out of stock: https://afreecloud.com/
Then there is InfinityFree which has been around for a while but when you check there forums there exist also quite some issues with them.
Your login still has a non-ssl forced page on it.
I warned you about this multiple times.
