  • Question:

Why so many CPU cores for so little disk space?

    Thanked by 1AlwaysSkint
  • Well, if they were CC, it'd be because the cores are 200Mhz.

wouldn't it be easy to find out the cores speed with lshw -short?
I don't think people will go with 200Mhz per core at that price.

This provider isn't the only one with this pattern of specs. As I've said before elsewhere, I can't see the point of multi-shared mult-cores, particularly with no stated contention ratio. One/two dedicated cores is much more predictable; a quarter share of 4 cores, anyone? The push for SSD has meant storage size has taken a nose dive - I'm glad to see some providers providing secondary storage of sensible proportions. Nothing wrong with SAS or SSD cached drives, in an optimised system = right-sizing.
    All, IMHO, of course.

I have a (Premium) VPS with this provider and apart from an initial hiccup, it looks promising. Decent Support and a competitive price.

where the figures come from, please?

Example of lshw -short from one of our VPS on the node:
    *-cpu:0
    description: CPU
product: QEMU Virtual CPU version (cpu64-rhel6)
    vendor: Intel Corp.
    vendor_id: GenuineIntel
    physical id: 401
    bus info: cpu@0
    slot: CPU 1
    size: 2GHz
    capacity: 2GHz
    width: 64 bits
capabilities: fpu fpu_exception wp de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 syscall nx x86-64 nopl eagerfpu pni cx16 hypervisor lahf_lm abm
    *-cpu:1

The CPU is shared as on every other provider nodes, the plans will be changed at late as for the current one are just promotional.

The dedicated cores VPS service cost more.

    That's why I stated I have a Premium one. ;)
My point was the contention ratio, however.

We do have a dedicated core plans but they are on XEN nodes.
