DotVPS - One Month Review

So, after decided to finish off my OpenVZ service with one of the providers in Maidenhead, I went ahead to buy a KVM located in the same DC from @Jack , aka the owner of DotVPS.co .

Now it's the time to pay off the next invoice, and almost one month of the service now, so I decided to write a review on LET for DotVPS.

My plan is the minimum KVM 256MB in Maidenhead, UK, priced at $3.5/mo. This price is in fact decent, as I used to pay almost the same amount (£2.5) for a 128MB OpenVZ. The order process was pretty normal, except for you needing to pay with Paypal via 2Checkout (due to fraud handling concerns). 2Checkout also manually reviews the payment, so a few minutes of delay is expected. The choice of OS is netinstall only at the ordering page, as a person who is lazy and prefer installed template, I had to log on to SolusVM to reinstall again.

Hardware 9/10

It seems that even 256MB KVM has access to 4 CPU cores, not sure about how much QEMU has taken from me, but it looks good, at least literally:

Though 256MB may cause a bit of problem when operating relatively memory consuming applications, the 15GB disk space means that you can add a 1024MB swap yourself, for the incase needs.`

Network 8/10

Maidenhead isn't a bad DC in UK, considering the limited options. Network is good for connections to EU, and speed to North America is acceptable. Also with 1Gbps port and ipv6, so I am pretty happy with the network performance.

Currently it is only used for general application serving purposes, along with a obfuscated TCP 443 OpenVPN to screw stupid firewalls. So I can't comment much on the performance as a web server. As a person from the past, I host serious websites only on $20+/mo big company VPS's.

Support 9/10

Jack is a pretty friendly guy, although some times weird :D Not sure whether he is the sole man behind DotVPS or not. As I am usually a self-sufficient VPS customer, I haven't ever filed a support ticket to him yet, but I believe the support (on an unmanaged level) would be good.

Overall: 9/10 - I would recommend this provider.
