use a regular usb hdd, boot the laptop in to any live linux distro from a usb port, dd your current disk image to the usb disk, swap the disk do the same in reverse.
Holy fuck, I was so sure after reading the terrible replies above I wouldn't see a sane reply. Like they didn't even bother to read the OP before replying with useless responses.
My only addition to this, probably need a current live disk to properly see the m.2 drive. Ie, Ubuntu 18.04 but not 16.04.
