HP DL160 Gen9 - video adapter

Hi

What video adapter I can use in a HP DL160 Gen9 and then to be able to share that video adapter in HyperV as RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter?

Thank you.

  • None ..

Hp part options for dl160 g9 not listed any video cards.. https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04442384

If you insist then you must find :

    1. A compatible vga adapter with pci-e slot on your server

    2. A compatible vga adapter that supported by hyper-v feature

    3. And hope you can add that card to 1U server without disrupt any other parts and disrupt air flow so your server not overheat..

And also you must do that on your own risk. If you want some supported vga card from HP then you need to use 2u server ...

    Thanks

I have tried some model, but no luck. The video card it can be detected by HyperV but the VM can detected but there is no video power in VM as if there were no video card.
Also I have tries with VMware ant its worse than HyperV.

I have asked the question to try to find an easier solution(maybe someone else had the same problem) than try and error.

    Hyper-V :

you can try this guide and make sure your vga card is compatible with the minimum requirements :
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/rds-remotefx-vgpu
    http://techgenix.com/enabling-physical-gpus-hyper/

VMware is more complicated especially if you use vSphere ESXi , basically you will need enterprise based vga card ( NVIDIA GRID, TESLA etc ) for most of vga card on vm feature with vmware vsphere.. check compatibility here :

    Shared Pass Through : https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=sptg

Virtual shared graphic acceleration : https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=vsga

Virtual Dedicated Graphic Acceleration : https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=vdga

  • Thanks
I have tried that. The VM detects the NVidia card, I can install the driver but there is no video acceleration.

A bit late to the party, but I've had luck with using AMD cards with Hyper-V and RemoteFX.

From what I can recall, NVidia's drivers will refuse to work with RemoteFX on consumer grade cards, but cards "certified" for RemoteFX by Nvidia themselves will magically work. This is contrary to Microsoft's guidelines on getting RemoteFX to work as pretty much any GPU that does DirectX 11 and has a driver that conforms to the WDDM 1.2 model.

Other than that, good luck with your RemoteFX experiment on that machine :P

EDIT: Also, your CPU needs to support SLAT, but I'm pretty sure that any recent enough CPU's should be able to do that out of the box.

  • Thank

The CPU is Intel E5-2680v4, it has SLAT. Please, tell me, what AMD cards did you tried?

It worked with Hyper-V on windows 2016 or Hyper-v Core only?

  • I've tried it with an 6770 and a RX560 and they worked both fine with RemoteFX.

That being said, the guest operating system must be a client edition of Windows in order to take advantage of RemoteFX in the first place.

Consumer grade cards are not legal for datacentre or commercial use for the official drivers. so it makes sense.

I'm pretty sure that there's no law prohibiting the use of consumer grade cards for datacenter usage. However, NVidia does this to "differentiate" their product segments and "encourage" their customers to buy the pricier versions of their GPU's for datacenter usage.

Now the question of reliability is another animal of it's own anyways.
