Hello,
Today I got an email from Hetzner my server hard disks "confiscated" by Amtsgereicht Stuttgart. What is the best way to resolve it?
Thanks

What were you hosting?
had them taken by court basically.. not good
I used it is shared hosting purpose. Don't know what customer did. Even no abuse/complaints email from Hetzner.
HAHA it's the local court in Stuttgart from a different state in Germany you've fucked up something ;-D. Usually you get abuses for the usual things, but for your harddisk a order was issued which means something really bad happened (terrorism, porn, childp. drugs etc.).
You can't resolve it just wait.
How many days? Hours?
Just restore your latest backups, son. And kill your business in case you don't have any.
What kind of stupid fucker who host child porn / terrorist website on a shared hosting.
Very long.. Its likely that you won't even get it back intact if it contains something that can help the criminal to get away.. (in case of a darknet drug site, bitcoin wallets or logins).
The harddisk is long gone now, hetzner can't help you other than putting a new HDD into the server. If you don't have backups youre simply fucked.
Terrorism forums is the best outcome for you. That would mean that they just want the logs about who posted some stuff. While for anything else, you can be held responsible.
This easily can take weeks or months, don't count on a fast procedure.
If you have 500-600 accounts in a server how do you monitor what your customer doing?
I have remote backup
Better say goodbye to these drives. Restore from backup and move on.
Hope you have good documentation on who your clients are.
erm more like years/never.
Restore from backup and do a manual audit yourself.
Mate, Germany is not UAE
I'd restore your backups, as many said before and check, what the reason could be.
I'm mean, they won't confisate any drives from someone just because of.. fun.
Anyhow, check for the reason first(!), then get it back online.
It probably happens all the time. If you restored a backup, however, you would be hosting the same stuff again....
Depends... http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/hausdurchsuchungen-bei-netzaktivisten-chaos-computer-club-kritisiert-polizeivorgehen-a-1216463.html
not comparable
lolwhat
That's the problem. You'd better audit what you where hosting to understand what caused the trouble...
I think I see this happen about once per year either on LET or WHT.
You won't get your HDD back, so restore form backup and be mindful of accepting anonymous payments (bitcoin etc) because, when the authority asks for more info on your clients, you can't say, "I don't know."
If you do, whatever charge(s) on your client falls on you instead.
his website doesn't accept bitcoin but I would think it is easy to determine which client is the problem.
Through your rechtsanwalt
The disks are gone, for a long time, ask Hetzner to get replacement disks.
Hopefully that will turn out well for you, not that some user pulls you in.
Hetzner will not make any public statements, contact them directly.
Hetzner won't make any statements privately either. They'll happily replace the confiscated drive with new ones, but all they'll do with regards to why they were taken is say "call this police office (link/number) with this reference number".
Typically OP has probably ended up with a customer doing one of the below:
Agreeing with the above - I strongly recommend OP find out what the cause was so that he can not restore the offending material. Whether he figures it out himself or calls the number hetzner would provide and ask about the reference number is up to him.
Wow, that's scary. Have you contacted a lawyer in Germany?
inb4 op says:
They replaced new disks... now restoring data from backup... It was disaster.
Thanks everyone..
If you have not audited your backups chances are you will be hosting the same shit that got your disks confiscated in the first place.
I would not support any illegal activities on my servers. So no torrents, sex etc. Risks are high, specially with physical location in Germany.
This said, I would be pro-active and get all details about that case. There must be an 'Aktenzeichen', so you can contact the handling Staatsanwalt and give them your best support. Help to identify the culprit. Otherwise they move on to the next shared host.
