Looking for a storage VPS to use as NFS server for a streaming server

Hello,
I am looking for a storage VPS to use it as NFS server for a streaming server

  • 4+ cores, 4Go+ RAM
  • 10TB storage, RAID10 (preferably)
  • 1Gbps port
  • Unmetered traffic
    Any suggestions?

  • What is your budget?

I can go up to 100€/month (and even more later on)

  • hosthatchhosthatch Patron Provider, Top Host, Veteran

We can do this in Stockholm or Los Angeles without the unmetered traffic. Do you have number of TBs for traffic in mind?

  • Here's what I found:

    https://www.online.net/en/server-dedicated/store-2-m

64GB ram, 18TB storage. However it is 500mbps unmetered, not 1gbps

    https://www.ovh.com/world/dedicated-servers/storage/1801fs07.xml

16GB ram, 24TB storage. Bandwidth is 500mbps unmetered with 1gbps bursts

You will probably not find 1gbps unmetered under 100 euro.

A safe bandwidth would be around 80TB/month (I still need to try for one month to have an accurate estimation)

Thank you! I will take these into consideration.

    What location?

Preferably europe to reduce latency with my main server but I do not think that it would make that big of a difference anyways.

  • Stupid question maybe, but if you mount the new server as a NFS share in the main server, isn't going to also consume bandwidth in the main server?

Like 80TB (nfs server)+80TB (main server)?

You're probably better off with a dedicated server with OVH or something, pricing for 10TB on our storage platform would be around £150/mo.

This is indeed beyond my budget. I appreciate your help.

Yes. But the main server is unmetered and there is a reason why I cannot directly increase storage on it.

  • How about GSuite?

  • Why nobody mentioned Hetzner? You can get a 2x3TB i7-2600 on auction for something like 30euro and add 2x6TB (€ 14.50 each). This gives you 32GB dedicated with decent CPU and 18TB storage (9TB if RAID1) for 50 euro/month. You can even replace all drives with 10TB HDDs to get RAID10 and probably still be within your budget.

    Details are here:
    https://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Root_Server_Hardware/en

  • Yeah, Hetzner SX61 (i7-3770, 32gb, 4x6TB) at 70 euro/m + 70 euro setup was the first thing I thought of. The auction servers are super cheap but often have very old disk drives that are on the verge of failure. I got lucky and got one with two new drives, but it costs more than the current ones with similar specs, so I've been resistant to downgrading (sidegrading?).

They have had some specials where they drop the setup fee for the EX series. I sometimes think of upgrading my auction dedi to an EX41 if they do that again. I'd be paying a bit more but getting newer hardware and 2x4TB disks instead of 2x3TB.
